Research Specialist in Surface Analysis

Research Specialist in Surface Analysis

Arbetsbeskrivning

The division of Applied Chemistry is looking for a research specialist who is highly skilled in surface sensitive techniques, processes for chemical surface modifications and fabrication of nanostructures. A number of the division's research projects focus on topics from biomaterials and biointerfaces to sustainable materials and nanomaterials. A common denominator across most projects is the use of various chemical and physical processes to control and analyze surface properties. These surface modification protocols need to be verified and evaluated in a quantitative manner. The role of the researcher will be to support projects in the area of nano- and surface science, assist in the development of our long term research goals, and to preserve working knowledge.

Information about the division research/the project
The research specialist will be employed at the division of Applied Chemistry, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The research specialist will be associated with the research group of Andreas Dahlin to 70%. Further, common duties for the good of the division will contribute to 30% of the working time. The position is permanent and the specialist is not expected to become an independent principal investigator. The position is not a faculty position nor a tenure track position.

Major responsibilities
The role of the specialist will be (1) to support the research activities in the areas of surface analysis and nanofabrication, (2) to assist in the development of long-term research goals, (3) to ensure that working knowledge, including safety aspects, is preserved across generations of PhD students and postdocs, (4) to co-supervise PhD students and undergraduate students and (5) to operate and maintain critical equipment and labs. Minor teaching opportunities may also be offered, but not as course responsible.

At the division, duties will include the management and safety of research labs, the maintenance of research instruments (e.g. BET, AFM, QCM-D, SPR) and training of new users.

Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.

Qualifications
The successful candidate has a PhD (or is close to completing a PhD) in a relevant topic such as physics, materials science or surface science. Mandatory experience and skills are (1) expertise in surface analysis, including chemical identification and physical characterization of thin films, (2) expertise in cleanroom processes for lithography, etching and deposition. Further desirable merits are expetise in (1) fluorescence microscopy, (2) Labview-type programming, (3) polymer brushes and (4) electrochemistry.

You should be able to perform quantitative analysis of thin films, obtaining information such as film thickness, swelling and adsorption kinetics using methods such as surface plasmon resonance and quartz crystal microbalance. You will also work with thin film deposition and plasma etching processes in a cleanroom environment. Further tasks will include the preparation of micro- and nanostructures by various lithography techniques.

You need to be able to communicate fluently in English. Further, it is a merit if you can communicate in Swedish. As a person, you need to be personally mature and enjoy hands-on experimental work, which can sometimes be very advanced, while at other times lab maintenance and support tasks need to be done. An ability to remain calm despite having a lot of things that need to be done is desirable. You should enjoy working by yourself, but also function well in close collaboration with others. You need to be service minded and willing to help others with their research.
