This multidisciplinary project is in collaboration with Linköping University, University of Gothenburg, Institut de l'environnement et des recherches agricoles (INERA) in Burkina Faso, and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) in Costa Rica and aims to analyze the relationship between different types of biomass (e.g. forests and agroforests) or deforestation, the systems carbon content and changes (biomass and soil) and conditions for water runoff, infiltration and groundwater, which scientifically is a very contested relationship particularly in the semi-arid tropics. The work for this position will focus on hydrological process studies (for example transpiration, runoff and groundwater recharge) and carbon pools in relation to trees and other vegetation. The successful candidate will pursue doctoral student research andtraining for two years, including a final Licentiate thesis exam. A two year extension for a full PhD might be possible pending additional project funding. The position is based at the department of Forest Ecology and Management (http://www.seksko.se/) at SLU in Umeå, but extensive field work in Burkina Faso is part of the duty.
