The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets.
Job assignments
To independently and together with other coworkers carry out research of a high international standard and report research findings in articles and at conferences. Supervision of students and shared responsibility for laboratory techniques and equipment will also be included in job assignments.
The long term scientific goal within this project is to identify and develop novel breast cancer therapies and diagnostic methods specifically focusing on cancer stem cell propagation in relevant microenvironments. The project involves scaffolds and 3D printing of relevant human microenvironments and will be focused on cellular communication systems mediating cancer stem cell activating or inhibitory signals as well as the influence of cell free primary breast cancer scaffolds on cancer stem properties.
Key methods that will be used in combination with primary breast cancer cells and functional cancer stem cell enriching assays are PCR/RNA-sequencing, breast cancer scaffold cultures and 3D-printed variant. The project will be based at Sahlgrenska Cancer Center consisting of basic and clinical researchers dedicated to translational cancer research.
Qualifications
PhD and experience within a for the project relevant subject area. Excellent ability to cooperate. Emphasis will be set on personal qualities.
Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 6 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
