Arbetsbeskrivning
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 49 000 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following four departments: The Department of Infectious Diseases, The Department of Microbiology and Immunology, The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology and The Department of Laboratory Medicine. At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets.
Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Biomedicine, Department Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Mucin Biologiy Groups are recruiting a scientist and laboratory manager. All the body's mucosal surfaces are protected by mucus layer. These mucus layers are different in different parts of the body and have mucins as main component. This includes the intestine where a first line of defense consists of an inner mucus layer. Our commensal bacteria live in the outer mucus layer where they utilize the glycans that coat the mucins. To do this, commensal bacteria produce a high number of enzymes able to degrade the glycans as well as proteins for attaching bacteria on the mucins. The Mucin Biology research groups currently comprise about 30 researchers with some 10 more in collaborative groups, see also www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/
Job assignments
The position requires good familiarity with proteins made by commensal bacteria and methods used for their expression, analysis (both specificity and structure) and analyses of mucins and their glycans. This includes mucin biological biology research including, but is not limited to, work on plasmids, PCR, bacterial cell culture (aerobic and anaerobic culture), purifying mucins, histology, glycan analysis, mass spectrometry and microscopy.
Qualifications
The applicant has a doctoral degree and extensive experience of working with commensal bacteria and expression, analysis (both specificity and structure) of bacterial proteins and analyses of mucins and their glycans. This includes mucin biological biology research including, but is not limited to, work on plasmids, PCR, bacterial cell culture (aerobic and anaerobic culture), purifying mucins, histology, glycan analysis, mass spectrometry and microscopy. Great emphasis is placed on the ability to interact with others within the group. Excellent knowledge of English is a prerequisite.
