Arbetsbeskrivning
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.
The overall aim of the project is to increase the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of neuroblastoma and downstream/upstream target proteins for Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK).
Job assignments
The research position is part of a project focusing on mechanisms that regulate the initiation, growth and survival of neuroblastoma / ALK positive cancers and their microenvironment. The researcher will use a wide range of methods, such as genetic, cell biological and in vivo models to observe/understand/clarify the upstream/downstream target proteins for ALK both during developmental processes and disease. The researcher will also be involved in Drosophila and zebrafish models of neuroblastoma/ALK positive cancer for validation of new therapeutic strategies. Signal pathways will be further investigated with respect to their pathological relevance.
Qualifications
PhD in a relevant subject. The applicant should have experience with Drosophila and zebrafish as a model system as well as experience with molecular biology and genetics. A high level of English communication and writing skills is a requirement. The candidate is expected to be active in the design and implementation of their projects, as well as to work closely with other members of the team. Methods used require knowledge of genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, and histology in Drosophila, zebrafish, and cell culture systems. The habit of treating Drosophila with medical inhibitors, screening, live imaging, biochemical analyses and cell culture model systems is an advantage. Laboratory knowledge and documented experience of Drosophila is a requirement.
Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 6 moths, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
