Arbetsbeskrivning
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.
The group that is now looking for an employee for work mainly on viruses that are spread via the fecal-oral route, but the project also involves work with SARS-CoV-2. Viruses are isolated from patient samples as well as from various water samples such as raw water and wastewater.
Duties
The tasks include isolation of virus from patient samples and concentration and isolation of virus in water samples. Some viruses will be isolated on cell cultures. The genome of the isolated viruses will be quantified by qPCR and analyzed by PCR and nesting followed by sequencing. Both Sanger sequencing and NGS will be used. Development of all of these techniques is included in the tasks. Working with some of these viruses requires work in a grade P3 laboratory.
Qualifications
Doctoral degree in a relevant subject area. Experience with extraction of nucleic acids from various patient samples and environmental samples. Experience of molecular techniques such as PCR, qPCR, sequencing, by both Sanger and NGS, isolation of viruses on cell cultures, concentration of viruses in water, including development of such techniques. Accustomed to working in a P3 laboratory is desirable.
Employment
