Duties:
The main tasks are to carry out research focused on boreal forest ecosystem functions and services. The research will include and combine approaches that span across several different levels of biological organization, including: 1) biological nitrogen fixation among different niches; 2) growth measurements on trees and shrubs at the individual and stand level; 3) vegetation, bacteria, and fungal responses to the abiotic environment; and 4) interactions on community level in biological systems. The combination of these approaches should help inform how ecosystem functions and services develop over time, and how natural and anthropogenic disturbances affect boreal forest ecosystem functions such as biological nitrogen fixation and nitrogen cycling.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD in Forest Science, with a focus on plant and microbial ecology. A background in silviculture will be advantageous. The applicants must have experience in measurements and analysis of biological nitrogen fixation, measurements and analysis of other nitrogen and carbon pools and fluxes, as well as the application of stable isotope methods to quantify nitrogen and carbon partitioning among ecosystem pools. The applicant should also have experience in microbial community profiling. Documented experience in establishing and managing experiments both under controlled conditions and in the field is an advantage. A background in research work in forests and with trees is a requirement. Experience as a postdoctoral researcher, from publishing scientific articles and in seeking and obtaining external research funding in relevant research areas is also meritorious. The applicant must be fluent in English, both spoken and written. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities such as the ability to work both in groups with other researchers and individually, as well as to establish collaborations within the research community as a whole.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has a key role in the development for sustainable life, based on science and education. Through our focus on the interaction between humans, animals and ecosystems and the responsible use of natural resources, we contribute to sustainable societal development and good living conditions on our planet. Our main campuses are located in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, however, the university also operates at research stations, experimental forests and teaching sites throughout Sweden.
SLU has around 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and doctoral students and a turnover of over SEK 3 billion. We are investing in attractive environments on all of our campuses. We strive to provide a work environment characterised by inclusivity and gender equality, where different experiences generate conversations between people and pave the way for science, creativity and development. Therefore, we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
