Department of Animal Nutrition and Management
The Department of Animal Nutrition and Management (HUV) conducts both basic and applied research from a systems perspective, with the environment and animal welfare in focus. We work with both more comprehensive questions regarding future feed and animal care, as well as more basic questions such as the animal's nutritional physiology, intestinal function and metabolism. The goal is to create an ethical, economic and sustainable production for society with good animal care that guarantees food of the highest quality. Our research concerns agricultural production animals, farmed fish and sport and pet animals. HUV is responsible for basic education, research and postgraduate education in the subject areas of nutritional physiology, feed science, management issues and aquaculture. HUV offers an inspiring research environment where we conduct research and teaching in collaboration with a number of different departments within SLU and with other Swedish and foreign universities.
The subject of aquaculture - cultivation in water - at HUV is a broad subject area. We work with the cultivation of fish and crustaceans as well as with blue catch crops (reeds and mussels), which are an important part of a circular production between land and water. Important questions are how different feed and forms of production affect both the fish and its environment, as well as the interaction between metabolism, behavior, production and animal health. HUV has a long tradition of working with these issues both in Sweden and in the rest of the world, with a special focus on low-income countries.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is a world-class international university with research, education and environmental assessment within the sciences for sustainable life. Its principal sites are in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, but activities are also conducted at research stations, experimental parks and educational establishments throughout Sweden. We bring together people who have different perspectives, but they all have one and the same goal: to create the best conditions for a sustainable, thriving and better world.
SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses.
