The Faculty of Technology offers a broad spectrum of activities across nine different departments and is central to the technical education and research conducted at Linnaeus University. The Department of Forest and Wood Technology offers wide-ranging thematic activities from the forest seedling to the finished wood product. Benefits for the climate arising from forests lie at the centre of all department activities. Based on this theme, the department meets societal challenges whilst contributing to two of the Linnaeus Knowledge Environments: Green sustainable development and Advanced materials.
Field of subject for the position: Researcher in Bio-based Materials and Composite Products
Placement: Department of Forestry and Wood Technology, Faculty of Technology, Växjö, Sweden.
Extent and period: The position is a time limited ranging from 1 Sep 2020 until 31 Dec 2021. Extent is 100%.
Context of position:
Sustainable raw material management and reduction of waste is a global necessity but also a possibility to maintain a high quality of life. Research initiatives should aim to increase resource efficiency through the wise use of primary and secondary bio-based raw materials for new sustainable products for furniture and building applications. It can be thus increased the total volume of CO2 stored as bio-based products, enlarging the life cycle of the fixed carbon in the new products. These efficiency actions could accommodate small-businesses start-up and enhancement of the competitive position of the existing ones.
Environmental and efficiency technologies represent the growth and leading markets for the future and, thus, investment in such business areas will boost resource and cost efficiency, enhance regional and international competitiveness and will have a positive impact on the job situation. The possibilities of using appropriate raw material streams for developing new products should be explored in close co-operation with the concerned sectors (furniture, construction, recycling) to take advantage of the novel technologies and market opportunities.
The working tasks consist mainly of research in Bio-based Materials and Composite Products.
Other duties can be:
• Conduct independent scientific research in the laboratory
• Establish and keep close co-operation with the industry and stakeholders of the forest-based and agricultural sectors, furniture producers, construction companies, and recycling managers
• Prepare reports for research projects
• Assist to prepare research proposals for National and European Funding Agencies
• Co-author manuscripts to refereed journals
In your job you are expected to actively participate in the department's environment and network both internally and externally.
20 % of the work can include teaching and tutoring in the undergraduate and graduate level.
Qualification requirements:
Qualified for appointment is the one who holds a PhD in Polymer Science and Technology, Wood Technology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Building Materials or an equivalent degree in a related field, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD, and who have completed their degree no more than five years before the application deadline.
To be eligible for this position is also required ability to speak and write in English.
Assessment criteria:
Qualifying otherwise is:
• Research experience on any of the above mentioned fields with focus on bio-based materials and composites
• Publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Knowledge on different supply chains of bio-based raw materials from primary sources as well as from recycling
• Ability to undertake a research project independently and meet strict deadlines
• Team player willing to work with others
The holder of the researcher position is assumed to have the ability to carry out research within the described area. The work is performed in a research group where teamwork and flexibility are considered of a high importance.
Applicants will be evaluated through a qualitative overall assessment of their competences and skills by following the before mentioned order of qualifications from 1 to 5. For the final selection, suitable applicants will be asked to attend an interview.
