Arbetsbeskrivning
We are looking for a researcher in biomedicine with a focus in bioinformatics, microbial genomics and proteomics for a fixed-term full-time position at the Department of Medical Sciences.
Subject area
The subject area for this position is biomedicine.
Background
Bacteriocins are antimicrobial peptides that have several advantages over conventional antibiotics. With support from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), Örebro University together with Linköping University and Luleå University of Technology and two companies are investing in a project (HEALiX) where cellulose materials, bacteriocins and sensors are combined in order to develop a new generation of advanced multifunctional wound dressings for treating acute and chronic wounds. The research and development of antimicrobial peptides takes place mainly at Örebro University with a group consisting of two senior researchers and three doctoral students. There is currently a lack of expertise in the field of bioinformatics and computer simulations regarding structural and functional dynamics, including proteogenomics, to clarify in detail how and by what mechanisms specific antibacterial peptides interact with bacteria and infected human cells.
Duties and responsibilities
The tasks as a researcher in the project include studies using proteogenomics and bioinformatics to identify new peptide sequences with optimal antibacterial effects and minimal cytotoxic effects, as well as an ability to bind to cellulose material or loaded in gels, and clarify the details about how and by what mechanisms the peptides kill various pathogenic bacteria and counteract infection of human cells.
Qualifications
Those qualified for the appointment as a researcher are applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. Previous holding of a postdoctoral position, in an area relevant to the position, for at least two years is a merit.
Assessment criteria
A general basis for assessment is that the applicant is able to demonstrate the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand; that they are able to cooperate with other members of staff; and contribute to the development of university operations.
The employment requires good experience in methods and techniques for both experimental studies and computer simulations regarding molecular biological and microbiological processes in different infection models. Expertise in bioinformatics, microbial genomics and proteomics is a prerequisite and experience of research on the mechanisms of action of antimicrobial substances is a merit. You who are applying must have the ability to work independently and since you will be part of a research group with doctoral students and other researchers, the ability to collaborate and to supervise doctoral students is an important part of the position.
Information
This is a fixed-term full-time position for two years. Appointment 1st July 2021 and place of employment is the Department of Medical Sciences, Örebro University. At Örebro University, salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
