Department of Forest Economics
The Department of Forest Economics is engaged in research and education about the forest-based circular bioeconomy with a focus on business administration, resource economics, policy, and sustainable development. The Department is responsible for Bachelor and Master degree programs as well as offering Ph.D. education in business administration and economics. It is located at two campuses: Ultuna (Uppsala) and Umeå. The Department has a strong international research network and holds the editorial office of the Journal of Forest Economics; we are a key partner in the joint SLU-Umeå University - Centre for Environmental and Resource Economics; we host the head office of European Forest Institute’s Forest Bioeconomy Network.
Subject area:
The subject area of the position is Business Administration with a focus on the bio-based sector, e.g., the forest sector. The purpose of the position is to develop knowledge in the subject of business administration with a focus on one or more priority specializations, such as circularity in business systems, sustainable business models, organizational theory, production economy, strategy, and innovation.
Duties:
The researcher is expected to develop an individual research profile in the subject area of business administration with a focus on sustainable business development in the bio-based sector. The holder of the employment will conduct teaching (courses, supervision, and examination) at undergraduate and advanced levels. The research and teaching are expected to take place in close collaboration within the department and other departments at SLU as well as through national and international collaboration.
The researcher is expected to:
• participate in and develop subject and interdisciplinary, educational as well as research collaborations,
• participate and develop education (on bachelor-, master, and PhD levels) within the subject area,
• initiate the development of own research, develop, and lead research projects and follow societal development that is important for the work in business administration with a focus on sustainable business development in the bio-based sector, in collaboration with the department researchers and with other researchers within the field,
• interact with the forest sector and other connected branches, and
• be able to teach in Swedish (or another Scandinavian language) within four years.
Qualifications:
Eligible for employment as researcher are candidates who hold a Ph.D. or have equivalent academic qualifications. Your background may be in business administration theoretical frameworks, or in industrial economics or equivalent, with interest in bio-based sectors. For employment as a researcher, the applicant must be scientifically proficient in the subject area of the employment. Equally important are proven pedagogic skills.
Good ability to communicate in written and spoken English is required, and a good ability to communicate in Swedish or other Scandinavian languages is of particular merit.
Assessment criteria:
The assessment criteria for appointment as researcher shall be the degree of the scientific expertise required as a qualification for employment through e.g., scientific publications, approved research grants, particularly within the Scandinavian bio-based sector.
Documented experience of teaching, including supervision, in the subject area, is a highly valued merit.
Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant’s experience of collaboration with industries relevant to the area, especially the forest industries. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on knowledge of the bio-based sector's value chains, from primary production to processing, consumption and recycling.
Good ability to communicate in Swedish (or other Scandinavian languages) in speech and writing is of particular merit. Good command in English, written and spoken, is a requirement. Furthermore, emphasis is also placed on applicant’s personal characteristics and communicative ability and the good ability to collaborate within and beyond the department.
