Researcher in Computer Science

Researcher in Computer Science

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a researcher in Computer Science for a permanent position at the School of Natural Sciences and Technology (NT).

Subject area
The subject area for this position is Computer Science.

Background
The general profile for this position is mapping (semantic mapping, spatial mapping of motion patterns) and introspection for reliability-aware mapping and safe localization of autonomous mobile robots. We are looking for a researcher who will represent these topics in the new EU research and innovation project DARKO (Dynamic Agile Production Robots That Learn and Optimise Knowledge and Operations).

The DARKO project will be carried out at the AASS Mobile Robotics & Olfaction Lab at Örebro University (ORU). AASS (Centre for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems) organises research and graduate studies in Autonomous Systems at Örebro University and is one of the appointed research environments of the Swedish Knowledge Foundation (KKS). The AASS centre currently has around 70 senior researchers and PhD students as well as several visiting researchers and associated PhD students from other Swedish universities.

The research effort at the AASS Mobile Robotics & Olfaction Lab has a pronounced interdisciplinary character. Research topics are characterised by a need for learning and fusion of information from different sensor modalities. Major themes are 3D perception, navigation, human-robot interaction, mobile robot olfaction, and lifelong learning by autonomous systems, demonstrated through long-term experiments in robot-environment interaction, and aiming to establish the necessary representations and algorithms for continuous operation of autonomous systems in a dynamic environment.

Duties and responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to research on (1) semantic mapping, (2) representing, learning and using maps of dynamics that represent spatial motion patterns – for “flow-aware” robots that are aware how people tend to move, and plan their motions to move safely and efficiently together with people; and (3) reliability-aware mapping and safe localization, enabling robots to better self-monitor the quality of their mapping and localization systems. The researcher is expected to be a driving force in writing scientific articles on the subject.

The employment may also include some amount of teaching.

Qualifications
Those qualified for the appointment as a researcher are applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree.

Assessment criteria
The candidate should have a strong mathematical / theoretical background and excellent programming skills. Programming experience in C++, Python and relevant frameworks such as ROS, PyTorch or TensorFlow are advantageous. Prior research experience in the areas mentioned under “Duties and responsibilities” is considered an additional qualification. It is not necessary to be familiar with the Swedish language, but excellent communication skills and proficiency in written English are mandatory.

A general basis for assessment is that the applicant is able to demonstrate the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand; that they are able to cooperate with other members of staff, and contribute to the development of university operations.

Information
This is a permanent, full-time position. At Örebro University, salary is subject to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, and positions announced are, where appropriate, subject to a trial period.

At Örebro University, we expect each member of staff to be open to development and change; take responsibility for their work and performance; demonstrate a keen interest in collaboration and contribute to development; as well as to show respect for others by adopting a constructive and professional approach.

Örebro University actively pursues an equal work environment and values the qualities that diversity adds to our operations.

For more information about the position, contact Professor Achim Lilienthal (achim.lilienthal@oru.se), or the Head of Unit Lars Karlsson (lars.karlsson@oru.se).
