Researcher in Computer Science

Researcher in Computer Science

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a researcher in Computer Science for a fixed-term position at the School of Science and Technology.

Subject area
The subject area for this position is Computer Science.

Background
Thanks to a recently approved research grant we are looking to hire a researcher in sensor processing and perception. The sensory modality we are focusing on here is RADAR. Previously and ongoing studies have been conducted using RADAR, but often with a specific focus on positioning in urban environment. The scope of this project is navigation, in particular in the context of underground mining, as well as higher-level perception from RADAR.

The researcher is to be based at Örebro University's Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS, http://www.oru.se/aass), which carries out multi-disciplinary research at the intersection of robotics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, computer science, and measurement technology. Our research in general is carried out in close partnership with world-leading corporations such as Volvo, Epiroc, Scania, LKAB and Bosch, as well as with the public sector. Our research on perception, planning and coordination systems for mobile robots is recognized world-wide.

Duties and responsibilities
The candidate is expected to conduct research on RADAR perception for tasks such as fast and accurate 2D or 3D mapping, positioning, and detection of people and objects, in mines with low visibility. The candidate is expected to interact with industrial project partners where data logging and evaluation will be an essential part of the project.

Qualifications
Those qualified for the appointment as a researcher are applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree.

Assessment criteria
A general basis for assessment is that the applicant is able to demonstrate the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand; that they are able to cooperate with other members of staff; and contribute to the development of university operations.

Prior experience in sensor processing at different levels is required. As RADAR is not yet a commonly used technique, prior knowledge of other similar range-based devices such as LiDAR is also of importance. Knowledge of localization and mapping using 2D or 3D lidar and/or RADAR, modeling and map representations, and experience with navigation and localization in real-world, outdoor, conditions is required. As one key objective is to look at situations involving smoke or fire in mines, previous knowledge or hands-on experience with rescue robotics in harsh environments is a plus. In addition, the candidate should have excellent programming skills, and experience with the Robotic Operating System (ROS). Documented experience with collaborative projects is a plus. The duties require communicative skills, both in writing and in speech, in English.

Information
This is a fixed-term full-time position for 24 months. The salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
