Researcher in Exposomics and Metabolomics

Researcher in Exposomics and Metabolomics

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a researcher in Chemistry for a fixed-term position at the School of Science and Technology.

Subject area
The subject area for this position is Chemistry (within Metabolomics / Exposome Research / Systems Medicine).

Background
We seek a researcher within the field of metabolomics and exposome research. Research is linked to the new and ongoing research projects funded by the Swedish Research Council, Novo Nordisk Foundation, Formas, and Academy of Finland. The main overarching theme of these projects is investigations of the links between exposures to environmental chemicals and the pathogenesis of certain metabolic and immune-mediated diseases, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 1 diabetes. The successful candidate will be embedded within the systems medicine research team:

supervised by Professors Matej Orešič and Tuulia Hyötyläinen.

Duties and responsibilities
The researcher will be primarily in charge of metabolomics studies in exposome research projects, working at the interface of chemical analysis (e.g., metabolomics, lipidomics, environmental chemicals), data processing, metabolite identification, and data analysis. Research may also involve integration of data across multiple modalities (e.g., metabolome, transcriptome, proteome). The successful candidate will also be involved in preparation of the research manuscripts, including as lead author.

Qualifications
Those qualified for the appointment as a researcher are applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree.

Assessment criteria
A basis for the assessment is the applicant’s ability to disseminate information and communicate; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilisation of the university’s research; as well as the ability and suitability to cooperate with other members of staff and contribute to the development of university operations.

Particular attention is to be paid to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to the future development of both research and education. Importance is also attached to a demonstrated ability and ambition to embark on a career within academia.

Successful applicant will have a strong background in at least one of the listed fields: analytical metabolomics/lipidomics, bioinformatics for metabolomics, and data mining. Good skills in R statistical language are expected. Skills in Python and Matlab are a plus. The applicant will also have good knowledge of common methods used in data integration and mining, such as pathway analysis, correlation network analysis, multivariate and univariate statistical methods.

Good oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory. General assessment criteria include good interpersonal skills and an ability to cooperate in an interdisciplinary environment and be able to work in a team. A demonstrated ability and desire to pursue an academic career is also of importance
