Researcher in microbial ecology and biogeochemistry of saline inland waters

Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
We are looking for a person who is interested in microbial ecology and biogeochemistry of saline inland waters.
About the position
You will study microbially mediated biogeochemical processes in inland saline aquatic systems. The employment includes a long-term mobility assignment in Spain and multiple sampling campaigns across Spain, Sweden, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Key responsibilities involve conducting gas flux analyses of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur gases, as well as measure volatile organic compounds. Additional tasks include comprehensive water and sediment assessments, including organic matter characterization, as well as metagenomic and metatranscriptomic characterization of microbiomes followed by bioinformatics analyses and statistical modeling using machine learning approaches. The work will to a large extent be carried out independently and should be reported in peer reviewed scientific publications.

Your profile
You must have a PhD degree in limnology, bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular biology, or a similar relevant field and must have practical experience with limnological sampling including gas exchange measurements as well as documented experience with molecular biology analyses and bioinformatics. You should have considerable experience in managing and documenting large-scale sampling campaigns, and it is also considered a merit if you have previous experience with field work in saline inland waters. We are looking for a candidate who can work independently in a structured manner, with attention to detail and with social and networking skills. The working language in the group is English, therefore you must be able to express yourself fluently in spoken as well as written English.

About us
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, microbial ecology as well as on environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology. The department has about 150 employees, of which approximately half are researchers/doctoral students and the other half are technical and administrative staff.
