Titel: Researcher in molecular pathology
Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of microorganisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following five departments: . The Department of Infectious Diseases . The Department of Microbiology and Immunology . The Department of Pathology and Genetics . The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine . The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology Pathology involves studies on etiology and pathogenesis of diseases. The aim of this position as researcher is to study the pathogenesis of a new muscle glycogen storage disease (GSD XV) that we recently described. The disease is caused by inactivation of glycogenin-1, which functions as a primer for glycogen synthesis. It is a genetic, recessively inherited disorder that presents with cardiomyopathy with cardiac failure and/or skeletal myopathy with weakness and wasting. There is abnormal storage of glycogen in the cells, so-called polyglucosan. Not much is known about the normal expression of glycogenin-1 and glycogenin.2 in humans and the aims of the planned studies are to study the expression of gkycogenin-1 and glycogenin-2 in human organs and tissues in the normal situation and in patients with glycogenin -1 inactivation caused by mutations in the GYG1 gene.
