The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)  is seeking a Researcher on trends and data for the Sahel/West Africa Programme. The successful candidate will actively contribute to the activities and projects implemented within the Programme and in projects’ survey-related tasks, data collection, analysis and data visualisation.

The SIPRI Sahel/West Africa Programme is a part of SIPRI’s research area on Conflict, Peace and Security. It conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses of the key conflict, security and peace-building issues affecting the contemporary Sahel and West/Central Africa region. The programme aims to document and understand the dynamics of conflict and of peacebuilding at the local level and disseminate evidence-based analysis at the appropriate level for greater policy impact. For this purpose, the programme works in close cooperation with African civil society organisations, research centres, international NGOs, as well as other external partners. Funding partners of the Programme are Embassies/MFA’s of European and non-European countries, Sida and the EU.

The Researcher on Trends and Data will contribute to the implementation of the quantitative methodology.

The Researcher will be responsible for:


• Supervising data collection/field research (Developing and coding questionnaires using CSPRO; training of the facilitators);
• Contributing to the collection and analysis of data on perceptions of local population in Western and Central Sahel (processing data using software intended for statistical calculations and graphic creation)
• Overviewing the quantitative work of the Programme (methodology, quality control).
• Conducting and writing high-quality research;
• Communicating research findings through research papers, and active participation to workshops and conferences;
• Contributing to research proposals.

The roll requires fluency in written and spoken English. Fluency, both spoken and written, in French is a major asset. The position is based in Stockholm and involve travels to Western and Central Sahel.

 

Requirements

The successful candidate will have the following:


• The Researcher should have a work experience of at least 3 years in a relevant field.
• The Researcher should at least have a master’s degree in a relevant discipline;
• Proven skills in quantitative research;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Knowledge of peace, conflict, stability and fragility issues in the region;
• Proven ability to work and deliver in small teams and short notices.

 

Contract period

Starting from 1 June 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be, initially, for a two-year period, and renewable. The post is full-time, and the successful applicant will be expected to reside in Stockholm with travel to Central and West Africa. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
