The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is hiring a talented and motivated Researcher/Senior Researcher to join its team working on Emerging Technologies.

The Researcher/Senior Researcher position
SIPRI’s research strategy in the area of armament and disarmament has identified emerging technologies as a priority issue area.
SIPRI is specifically interested in recruiting a Researcher/Senior Researcher to reinforce the capacity of SIPRI’s research team on a) the governance of emerging technologies under international law ; and/or b)responsible innovation.
The position is based in Stockholm but might involve occasional travel.
Tasks and responsibilities
• Provide expertise: Develop and apply expertise on a) the governance of emerging technologies under international law; and/or b) responsible innovation;
• Research: Conduct, supervise or collaborate on research activities on issues related to development, production, use, transfer or control of emerging technologies;
• Fundraising: Initiate, facilitate or collaborate on the design of funding proposals and new projects;
• Project management: Manage, supervise or collaborate on the budgeting and reporting on externally funded projects;
• Staff supervision: Manage and mentor staff in line with the cluster’s and project’s strategy and Institute policy;
• Dissemination and Outreach: Conduct dissemination activities to promote SIPRI’s work to external audiences (e.g. presentations at events, media interviews);
• Institutional development: Contribute to a pleasant and stimulating intellectual and work environment in the Institute.
Requirements
The successful candidate should have a strong research profile, an entrepreneurial spirit and a demonstrated interest and knowledge in governance issues related to emerging technologies. The candidate is a team player but can also work independently. S/he is highly organized, a good communicator and enjoys presenting in a variety of settings.
When starting in the post, the Researcher/Senior Researcher should have the following experience and skills:
• At least 3 years of relevant work experience for researcher level (5 years for senior researcher level)
• University degree(s) in disciplines and topics relevant to this post such as International Law or International Relations, Science and Technology Studies, Strategic Studies, War Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering.
• Expertise in relevant area(s) of science and technology
• Expertise on policy issues of relevance for SIPRI’s work on emerging technologies
• A record of publications or communications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research or in impacting policy
• Experience in publishing and verbal communication on complex technological or policy issues
• Experience in communicating effectively with policymakers through written or verbal means
• Excellent writing and communication skills in English.
• Excellent time management and organisational skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office tool suite
Desirable qualifications:
• Strong network in relevant organisations or fields
• Fundraising experience
• Expertise on at least one of the following areas
• International (humanitarian) Law
• Science and Technology Policy, Responsible Innovation
• Additional language skills
• Particular software and technical skills – e.g. project management, visualisation software
Contract period
Starting January 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter, the contract period will initially last for 2 years with the possibility of extension. The post is full-time. Subject to any restrictions on travel related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden when employment starts. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
