The Accelerator Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a RF Engineer/Physicist.
Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world´s most powerful neutron source.
The RF Group is responsible for the design of the radiofrequency (RF) system for the ESS accelerator including the low level RF (LLRF), high power RF, modulators and RF distribution to power the RF quadropole (RFQ), the drift tube linacs (DTLs) and more than 100 superconducting cavities.
Qualifications and main responsibilities
As RF Engineer/Physicist your main responsibilities will be to assist in the design, specification, procurement, and installation of the ESS RF system with specific emphasis on the High Power Amplifiers. Your main areas of responsibility include:
• High Power Amplifier Support
• Support with identification of machine equipment required
• Support with identification and selection of test and measurement equipment
• Production of specifications, tendering and contract management
• Support with design, procurement and installation for the RF conditioning stands
• High power testing of initial prototype devices and follow up production units
• Supervision of contractors and suppliers as required
To be successful in this position, we believe you have a relevant degree in electrical engineering, physics or equivalent.
You have significant proven specific experience in:
• Use/design of high power RF devices and significant experience and theory of at least one of the following devices: Klystrons, IOTs, tetrodes, magnetrons or similar tube based amplifiers
• Use/design of solid state amplifier technologies
• RF test and measurement including specific experience with common test equipment including network and spectrum analysers, oscilloscopes, RF power meters and typical RF components including RF couplers, circulators, transmission lines etc
• Analytical and numerical simulation
• RF calculations including VSWR, s-parameter, RF losses
Experience of the following is an advantage.
• Board design and fault finding
• EPICS, PLC, FPGA programming or similar
• Accelerator technology
• Ionising and non-ionising radiation
• High voltage power supplies or modulators
• Production and working with safety procedures
In addition to your technical skills you:
• Have proven system analysis and problem solving skills
• Have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
• Are fluent in written and spoken English
• Are able to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team within the group and with other groups
• Work in a systematic way, have good organizational and report writing skills
• Have some project management experience
• Are able to supervise, staff, contractors and suppliers
• Must be available for occasional travel
• It is expected that during commissioning and operation there may be a requirement for occasional shift working.
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
