Arbetsbeskrivning
Are you experienced within in vitro biochemical and cellular assays within the metabolic disease research area? Would you like to apply your expertise in a global company that is accelerating innovative science and turn ideas into life changing medicines? Join us to discover future treatment of Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic diseases!
Working at AstraZeneca means being entrepreneurial, thinking big and working together to make the impossible a reality. We are now recruiting a highly motivated Scientist to join the Bioscience Metabolism group of the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism department (CVRM). The position is placed at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.
CVRM is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca which deliver candidate drugs into clinical development. CVRM Metabolism Bioscience department has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We are a team of professionals who are passionate about advancing science, to discover and develop novel therapeutics that will benefit patients suffering from diabetes, obesity, NASH, cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease.
What you'll do
This is an exciting lab-based role where you will work in a close collaboration with scientists in the CVRM in vitro team, as well as with colleagues from Medicinal Chemistry, Discovery Sciences, DMPK and external collaborators. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality data in cell-based disease models to build a detailed understanding of the mode of action of new targets in the field of metabolism, and support projects through target validation and lead optimisation phases. The work includes independent planning and execution of experiments, assay development, troubleshooting and timely reporting of data according to agreed timelines.
The successful candidate should have a proven pharmacology and cell biology expertise for the characterization and profiling of various therapeutic modalities in in vitro biochemical and cell-based assays. You should have hands-on in vitro pharmacology experience, particularly in cell-based and ex-vivo models of diabetes, obesity and/or NASH. You will be involved with all aspects of lab-based experimental work, including the design, execution and interpretation of data. Additionally, you will communicate findings to project teams and the wider organisation. The ability to work well in a team environment is essential for this position and you will join a team whose remit is to support our drug discovery projects globally with detailed understanding and mechanism of action data.
With this position, we offer you a highly rewarding scientific environment with ample learning opportunities and an expectation to publish new findings.
Essential Requirements:
*
Degree in one of the Life Sciences disciplines.
*
Capability to participate in all experimental work including design, analysis and interpretation of data to agreed timelines.
*
Ability to work under general supervision and adaptable to performing experiments independently or in collaboration with others on assigned tasks. Good communication skills.
*
A "hands-on" expert with in vitro models and methodologies, with an enthusiasm for laboratory work and scientific curiosity, plus a desire to learn and build on the role.
*
Hard working, organised, balanced and meticulous with an ability to work well under pressure.
*
Experience with 3D spheroid models and expertise to establish and evaluate models of liver disease in the context of steatosis and fibrosis.
*
Knowledge and experience with automation and robotic methods for increasing throughput and medium to high density microtitre plate technologies.
*
Experience with disease relevant cell types such as islets, primary adipocytes and/or primary hepatocytes.
*
Experience with ex vivo analysis of blood/tissue samples (including qPCR for gene expression, western blots, and ELISA).
*
Ability to develop new methods, technologies, and processes when necessary for project advancement.
*
Experience in data analysis and interpretation and enthusiasm for problem solving for scientifically challenging work
Desirable Experiences and Abilities:
*
Experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
*
Knowledge of bioenergetics and mitochondrial function (such as use of SeaHorse Bioanalysers).
*
Practical knowledge of immunofluorescence techniques including confocal and non-confocal high-content imaging, flow cytometry, image acquisition and analysis.
*
Experience with siRNA, AAV or CRISPR/Cas9 editing.
*
Excellent problem-solving skills, not limited to own area of expertise.
*
Keeps up to date with current advances in the disease area.
*
Background in metabolic disease research areas and familiarity with the drug discovery process.
