Biopharmaceuticals R&D is continuing to build a new cell therapy department with the goal to establish AstraZeneca as a world-leader in the stem cell field and to build a competitive pipeline within cell therapy across disease areas within Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) and Respiratory and Inflammation (R&I). The cell therapy department will bring together >50 specialists to support the organisation with cell therapy and bioprocessing expertise and capabilities. The new department will be an agile "biotech-like" organisation, with specialists in the department working closely with experts across AstraZeneca to bring to bear the existing and emerging platforms in stem cell technologies, new modalities, universal cell lines, and CRISPR-mediated genome editing.
The role is placed at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden, where you will work in an international environment at the fore-front of Cell Therapy science.
What you'll do
As a bioprocess scientist in this laboratory based role, you will work as part of a team developing new and innovative techniques for the scalable isolation, expansion, differentiation, purification and cryopreservation of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product (ATMP) candidates. You will work collaboratively with project leaders, in vitro and in vivo scientists and therapy area specialists to ensure efficient progress of Cell Therapy projects. You will use your problem solving approach and technical skill to generate new solutions and take a prominent role in developing our bioprocessing capabilities. In this role you will have the opportunity to work in a highly cross disciplinary environment with innovative techniques and technologies within areas such as the scalable closed GMP ready production of pluripotent, immune and tissue engineered products.
Accountabilities include:

Shape and implement the design and execution of investigations related to the screening, optimisation and scale-up of processes to generate high quality data to support cell therapy programs.

Handle biological specimens from humans, preparing and maintaining cell cultures to generate cell therapy drug substance
*
Format and analyse data, communicating the impact on given project delivery
*
Keep up to date with relevant scientific literature and technology platforms as well as contributing to and publishing scientific papers.
*
Ensure that your work is compliant and in accordance with relevant internal and external standards and regulations.
Essential for the role
*
MSc in Cell Therapy related fields with additional relevant experience.
*
Knowledge of the ATMP field and the product modalities currently in development
*
Experience in the operation of relevant cell culture characterisation techniques and associated analysis.
*
Good scientific presentation skills and ability to comfortably present and discuss scientific data.
*
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Desirable for the role
*
Experience in utilising bioprocessing techniques for the production, purification and cryopreservation of mammalian cell products
*
Knowledge of Quality by Design approaches, including the use of statistical tools to drive experimental design.
*
Knowledge of GMP ways of working
