The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Section Leader at the Mechanical Section of the Design and Engineering Group.

Description of directorate/division


The Engineering and Integration Support Division is the central technical division providing transversal support and services to the ESS project and organization. The existing division is divided into 4 groups: Design & Engineering; Integration; PLM & Process Support and Survey, Alignment & Metrology.  The E&IS Division is:


• A service provider of engineers and designers for the ESS projects for in-house design activities as well as activities performed by collaborating organizations.
• Responsible for development and maintenance of the design processes including accommodation and maintenance of design systems and tools.
• Responsible for the management of the Product Data Management System, the integrated CAD-model (ESS Plant Layout) and classification and standardization of e.g. components and materials. 

Job description:

Directly reporting to the Group Leader for Design & Engineering Group, part of Engineering and Integration Support Division, the Section Leader is as line manager responsible for: 


•  Manage and supervise the team of mechanical engineers/designers supporting the wide organization and different projects and sub-projects
•  Plan for and assure development of the team according to needs and requests during different phases in ESS program (including initial and steady state operation)
•  Lead the development and administration of general governing documents for mechanical design

In-line with these objectives the key accountabilities will include but are not limited to:


•  Plan and organize the work and assignments for the personnel in the Section
•  Assure and supply needed resources and competence as requested from the organization 
•  Introduce and educate staff in design and engineering platform and in ESS overall routines
•  Develop, review and validate mechanical design procedures and associated documents, in accordance with applicable procedures, requirements, regulations, rules and standards
•  Review proposed designs and other documents performed by the Section and/or external collaborators
•  Gain experiences from different work units, develop and transmit to the team
•  From other divisions requests, allocate resources from the E&IS Division within mechanical engineering and design for accelerator systems, target systems and neutron scattering instruments. (E.g. cryomodules, beam diagnostics, RF structures, cooling systems, neutron target, sample environment)
•  Set requirements and implement required technical methods, routines, tools, standard components and framework agreements to enable effective mechanical engineering and design.



The Engineering role also comprises:


•  Taking role as lead engineer or design coordinator in projects
•  Prepare presentations and respond to recommendations from technical design reviews and advisory committees
•  Participate in R&D and prototyping of technical equipment
•  Review and assist in creation of the design and requirement documents
•  Manage procurement of designed components/systems
•  Writing technical specifications, performing market surveys and price enquiries to find appropriate suppliers

Qualifications:


•  Master or Bachelor in mechanical engineering or equivalent education in combination with relevant experience
•  Experience in mechanical engineering and product or plant design, involving complex engineering problems
•  Experience from planning, coordinating and leading engineering teams
•  Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and mechanical engineering principles, codes and standards required
•  Experience from work in PLM-systems and 3D-CAD, preferably (but not necessary) in CATIA
•  Experience from working with strategic issues and organizational structures is an advantage, especially in an international environment.
•  Good leadership and training skills
•  Adaptability, good communication skills and the ability to identify issues and proactively work to solve them are necessary to perform well in this position
•  Excellent oral and written English skills are prerequisites
•  Strong ability to interact with multiple stakeholders




Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.

Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
