Senior Counsel - Intellectual Property

Role Summary/Purpose:

The Senior Counsel, will be responsible for setting & driving the global IP strategy in the hardware field across one or more business sectors in GE Healthcare. Working primarily with GEHC Life Sciences group of businesses (particular focus on the Bioprocess & Research & Applied Markets), they will be responsible for all aspects of IP including idea generation, monitoring patent filing & prosecution work carried out by GE's PAD CoE, trade secrets, freedome-to-opearate, due diligence etc.

Essential Responsibilities:

Works closely with R&D to ensure that sufficient ideas and Invention Disclosures are generated
Ensures that patent filings are of high quality on commercially significant inventions by working with R&D, business managers, marketing and GE?s Patent Asset Development Center of Excellence
Works with cross-functional team to secure revenue through out-licensing where appropriate
Conducts and/or advises on EP opposition and appeal proceedings or US post-grant reviews.
Drafts and negotiates IP-related clauses in licensing and collaboration agreements
Ensures freedom to operate and minimizes exposure to third party IP, including drafting opinions where appropriate
Assists with IP litigation management for business with GC and Chief Litigator for GEHC
Provides IP advice on major transactions and acquisitions, including due diligence activities
Works with business leaders to set and implement appropriate IP strategies to achieve business objectives
Responsible for partnering with stakeholders across the business to cultivate high-value patent assets and safeguard proprietary information

Qualifications/Requirements:

Qualified European Patent Attorney or USPTO-registered Patent Attorney and member of the state bar (or equivalent), or equivalent attorney qualification or registration in another country
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Technical background in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics or related areas
Experience of devising innovative IP strategies
Good commercial awareness

Desired Characteristics:

IP attorney experience working in a corporate IP environment (although applicants from private practice will be welcome)
Experience working in the healthcare sector would be desirable but not essential
