The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Senior Electronics Technician - Automation Technology. If you are looking for a diverse and challenging role in a multicultural environment, this challenge is for you. You are needed.

Description of directorate/division
The Electrical Engineering Group is part of the Neutron Technologies Division and dedicated to providing and supporting key components required for the construction and operation of the facilities scientific instruments. The consistently high performance of systems throughout years of operation in harsh environments is critical to the instruments and the facility.
The group will compose around 8 – 10 competent engineers and technicians of different areas of expertise, responsible for the design, development, procurement, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical, safety interlock and motion/automation control systems on all instruments.

Group members will operate within the stimulating environment of the scientific research, working closely with instrument engineers and scientists to define specifications and solutions required for the construction of the facilities world-leading suite of neutron scattering instruments. 

Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with creation, development and support of solutions in motion control and industrial automation for the ESS Neutron Scattering Instrumentation:



• Develop cabling and installation procedures and standards for automation components on the instruments incl. prototyping, testing and documentation

• Define and test appropriated standard components (connectors, cables, cabinets etc.)

• Continuously developing cabling solutions for the challenging harsh environmental conditions of the single instruments (vacuum, ionising radiation, high EMF, high magnetic field etc.)

• Support the instruments design process by evaluating and determining appropriated cabling topologies

• Support the Lead Instruments Engineer in defining the instruments wiring scheme and compiling the appropriated documentation

• Advice and train the contracted electricians in the instruments construction phase

• Support the engineers in integrating the automation components in the instruments commissioning phase

Qualifications
To be successful in this position we believe you have a profound and certified practical education such as Electronics Technician, Industrial Electrician or similar. With at least 10 years work experience in planning and installing industrial automation components including electrical scheme work and testing/commissioning preferably in research facility environment you are an expert in your field. You have deep knowledge in wiring hardware devices such as PLCs, sensors or switch cabinets and are familiar with the appropriated cabling processes and strategies. An additional certified Engineering School or Technical College qualification is a plus.

Strong communication, teamwork and collaboration skills are a must. You are proud of your work, set high standard for quality and quantity and constantly keep you up-to-date with the current market of automation technologies. Your high level of practical experience allows you to train and guide contracted staff and enforce the developed technical standards. Excellent oral and written English skills are a pre- requisite.

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
