The European Spallation Source is hiring motivated and inspiring people from across the globe to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. The ESS is a partnership of 13 European countries and occupies a truly impressive campus based in the beautiful, cosmopolitan university city of Lund, Sweden – just 10 minutes from Malmö and 30 minutes from Copenhagen.
We are now looking to appoint a Senior Engineer for Machine Protection. This is a mission critical role that exists within our Integrated Control System (ICS) division. The tasks and responsibilities of the Integrated Control Systems (ICS) division include - but are not limited to - the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility.
As a key member of the Protection Systems Group, you will play an integral part in the design, realization, operation and consolidation of the ESS Machine Protection and Personnel Safety Systems. We are therefore looking for a very experienced engineer with significant, documented leadership experience in project or operational contexts, as well as the gravitas and authority needed to lead the planning, commissioning and implementation of our machine protection systems.
About the role:
As the successful candidate and future Senior Engineer for Machine Protection you will:
• Lead the planning and manage the project.
• Ensure implementation is on time, on budget and with the right level of quality.
• Estimate and own the work scope, cost, and schedule, including the technical and resource requirements to deliver, operate, maintain, and upgrade the machine protection systems.
• Ensure performance of machine protection systems is in accordance with commissioning milestones and operations requirements.
• Participate in risk reviews and manage risks.
• Assemble and drive a machine protection coordination team.
• Track and ensure timely delivery of the machine protection systems using ESS processes and appropriate tools.
• Assure that all work is planned and executed in accordance with ESS quality assurance and ESH&Q policies and procedures.
• Manage changes in accordance with goals, change control policies and procedures.
About you:
As a recognised master in your professional discipline, you are someone who can bring:
• 10 or more years of experience in working with large, complex and/or mission critical systems.
• 10 or more years of experience in either electrical and hardware design or software design of complex and mission critical systems.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role.
• 5 or more years of experience in working with PLC-based interlock systems.
• 5 or more years of experience in working with FPGA-based interlock systems.
• Good knowledge of functional safety standards - such as IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, a sense of humour and the ability to build strong and effective networks of contacts both inside and outside of the organisation.
• Excellent skills in both written and oral English. The ability to speak or learn Swedish would be a definite advantage – but is not a requirement.
