The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source Eric in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Senior Engineer Superconducting RF.
Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and other divisions of the ESS. The ESS linac will have three families of superconducting acceleration structures: spoke cavities, medium-beta elliptical cavities and high-beta elliptical cavities. The cavities and their cryomodules will be in-kind contributions from partners in several European countries, with deliveries to ESS in Lund taking place in 2019 and 2020. The successful candidate will work within the existing Linac Group of the ESS Accelerator Division, where at present three persons are involved with SRF-related tasks. According to the current long-term plan of the ESS Accelerator Division, SRF will form a group of its own in the operations phase, and the number of persons working with SRF is expected to grow.
Description of main responsibilities
ESS is here searching for a senior engineer that will be responsible for the ESS activities relating to superconducting RF. This includes overseeing the fabrication and testing of cavities and cryomodules, ensuring their proper integration with other accelerator systems and infrastructure, planning and supervision of their installation, performing hardware commissioning and assisting during beam commissioning. On a longer time scale, maintenance of the SRF installations will be a main activity, and it is expected that a complete SRF test facility can be built up at ESS, where maintenance and repairs as well as new developments can be made.
Qualifications
• PhD or equivalent background in physics or a related subject.
• Minimum 15 years of work experience after the PhD in the field of superconducting RF technology for particle accelerators.
• Experience in commissioning and operation of particle accelerators.
• Demonstrated organizational, managerial and leadership skills.
• Experience of working in an international environment.
• Excellent oral and written English skills.
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
