Department of Plant Breeding
The Department of Plant Breeding, at SLU in Alnarp, works with research, education and innovation work. The focus is on activities that are of strategic importance for crops with a sustainable and profitable production of plant-based food, feed and industrial products in a changing climate. Subject area
The subject of the position is biology with a focus on breeding of host plant resistance to dominant pathogens in agriculture crops. This includes, among others, using small RNAs for plant trait improvement, resistance to pathogens and breeding for traits that enhance the related microbiota that improve resistance to pathogens and performance in stress-prone environments, particularly under a changing climate.
Duties
The senior lector shall within the subject:
• develop, lead, and conduct internationally successful research
• develop, lead, and conduct teaching and examination on basic level and advanced level
• actively conduct supervision of doctoral students in postgraduate subjects that include host plant resistance from a plant breeding perspective
• actively seek national and international research funding in competition and publish peer-reviewed scientific papers
• conduct research-based collaboration with researchers within and external to SLU
• communicate research results and contribute with relevant knowledge to the surrounding society
• contribute to SLU development goal of sustainable agriculture production
• contribute to the faculty's strategic development through administrative tasks within the subject area, the department and the faculty
Qualifications
The applicant shall:
• have a PhD in a relevant subject for the appointment, e.g. genetics, plant biology, pathology
• be scientifically skilled within the subject of the appointment and have demonstrated the ability to obtain external research funds in competition
• have a record of publishing their research in for the subject high quality journals at an international level
• have demonstrated pedagogical skill in teaching at basic level and advanced level including supervision of research students
• have experience of research collaboration
• have undergone university pedagogical training of at least 10 weeks of full-time studies or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge
The department has a parallel language work environment. The lecturer will be able to carry out most of his tasks in English. As the university is Swedish-speaking, however, the holder is expected to be able to work and teach in Swedish within four years of taking up the position. The institution will support the holder to achieve this.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for this appointment will be based primarily on the degree to which the applicant possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.
When assessing scientific skills, the following will be taken into account:
• ability to independently initiate and lead innovative research, especially within the current research area
• ability to obtain external research funding in competition
• ability to publish in scientific journals or books
When assessing teaching skills, the following will be taken into account:
• ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate teaching
• ability to integrate research and a scientific approach in teaching
• experience in supervising doctoral students and examining students
When assessing other skills, the following will be taken into account:
• ability to develop and lead scientific activities and personnel at university level
• ability to collaborate, communicate and cooperate with relevant stakeholders and the surrounding society
• ability to communicate ongoing research and development work
In assessing the candidate's qualifications, equal consideration will be given to teaching and research expertise.
After the assessment criteria, personal characteristics and personal suitability will also be taken into account.
