Senior Lecturer in clinical pathology combined with employment as specialist in clinical pathology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital
Ref PAR 2022/1213
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
At the department of biomedicine, we study the cells of the human body. How they function, how they are genetically controlled and interact with the surrounding environment. The aim is to clarify the genetic and molecular underpinnings of disease and to identify novel treatments and diagnostic procedures. This easily allows for integration with clinical pathology. The subject matter of clinical pathology has recently expanded rapidly, not least by the introduction of advanced biopsy techniques and molecular biological technique development. The number of samples and sample types expand each year and the department of pathology at the Sahlgrenska university hospital is the largest in Scandinavia. It offers a complete diagnostic repertoire directed to all areas of disease and organ systems. We wish to recruit a lecturer in clinical pathology that can develop the strong traditions of medical education and research of the department and further interaction with relevant stake holders, chiefly within university/ healthcare.
Subject area
Clinical pathology
Subject area description
Clinical pathology is a specialty within laboratory medicine, the core task of which is diagnosis of disease. Tissue samples form the basis for analysis and the main tool is histopathological examination of tissue samples. In addition to conventional tissue stains, supportive techniques such as immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and molecular biological techniques as PCR, RNA and DNA sequencing are used. Pathology offers a broad base for research into all disease groups with a special focus on tumour biology and inflammatory conditions.
Duties
The position has a clear focus on teaching and course management. The successful applicant is expected to actively teach and develop basic education within the subject area. This chiefly at medical school, but also for other programs such as school of dentistry, biomedical technicians etc. The applicant is expected to be course manager for the pathology course at the medical school at the University of Gothenburg. The percentage of teaching can be partially adjusted according to the profile of the applicant. Regarding research, the employee is expected to perform research within the realm of pathology, tumour biology or other field of relevance for the position. The position also entails strengthening the research environment at the University of Gothenburg by acting as supervisor for e.g Ph.D students and post-doctoral researchers. The research focus is preferably translational, combining basic scientific methodology with patient samples. About 30 % of the employment is devoted to clinical practice within the pathology areas where the applicant is proficient. The clinical duties will be designed in dialogue with the applicant. Clinical and academic leadership is also expected to be part of the position along with administrative duties. Examples of the latter are grant assessment committees and planning bodies for clinical and pedagogical infrastructure. If the applicant does not master the Swedish language, she or he will be given two years respite to learn the language from the date of hire.
Eligibility
