Department of Plant Protection Biology
The department of Plant Protection Biology carries out education and research in Ecology, Chemistry, and the Biology of plant protection. Please see link.
Subject area
The subject area of the position is applied ecology for sustainable plant production (agriculture, horticulture and forestry). This includes:
• general ecological concepts
• functional biodiversity
• organism behaviour and underlying mechanisms
• pollination
• population dynamics
• biological control
• monitoring of pest and beneficial organisms, and protected/vulnerable species
Duties
Within the subject area the senior lecturer shall:
• perform teaching, supervision and examination at the undergraduate and graduate levels within relevant educational programmes, such as agricultural management, horticultural engineer and landscape engineer first cycle educational programmes, and Master programmes such as Horticultural Science and Agroecology
• develop and strengthen the education and research, and follow the societal development that is of importance for the field of ecology and plant protection, for sustainable development
• participate in and develop educational cooperation within the subject area, department, between departments within SLU, as well as with similar subject areas at other universities, nationally and in international networks
• contribute to the strategic development of the faculty through administrative assignments within the subject area, department and faculty
• publish peer-reviewed scientific papers, obtain competitive research funding, and supervise PhD-students
• in collaboration with the subject leaders develop the subject scientifically
• establish and develop contacts with stakeholders within “the green sectors” (agriculture, horticulture and forestry) and contribute to sustainable development through collaborations with other relevant organisations
Qualifications
The successful candidate must:
• have a PhD in ecology or a similar subject
• have shown pedagogic skills in teaching and supervision at the undergraduate and graduate level
• have at least ten weeks full time university pedagogic education or have gained equivalent knowledge in other ways
• be scientifically skilled within the subject area and have been awarded competitive, external research funding
• have experience from applied research within the subject area
• have documented experience from contacts with stakeholders within “the green sectors” (agriculture, horticulture, and forestry) and other societal bodies working with sustainable development
• have good knowledge in Swedish or another Scandinavian language and in English
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria for appointment of a Senior Lecturer will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant possesses the required qualifications specified for the position. Assessment of pedagogic and scientific skills shall be given equal consideration.
The pedagogic assessment will consider:
• planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching within the subject area
• supervision of students and examination within the subject area
• ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into teaching
• pedagogic leadership
Experience of modern teaching methodologies, such as digital teaching methods and e-based learning is a merit
The scientific assessment will consider:
• research within the subject area including peer-reviewed scientific publications in relevant and established journals within the subject area
• capacity to initiate and pursue outstanding research in the subject area
• capacity to continuously acquire external research funding and/or grants within the subject area
The assessment of other skills will consider:
• species identification knowledge for teaching within the subject area
• good cooperation network important for the subject area and for the department teaching and research
• good knowledge about agriculture, horticulture and forestry
• developed communication and cooperation abilities, including those with stakeholders, the public and other researchers
