Södertörns högskola (Södertörn University) in south Stockholm is a dynamic institute of higher education with a unique profile and high academic standard. The study of English at Södertörn University is offered as an independent major and is also included in the curriculum of specific educational programmes such as the European Studies Programme, International Economics, and Media studies, English and Globalisation (MEG), as well as the Intercultural Teacher Education programme. The subject of English is also responsible for open elective introductory courses in English which can be attended by both Swedish and international students. In addition to developing English language proficiency, the subject is responsible for teaching and research in English linguistics, English-language literature, and cultural studies.
Employment specifics
The position of Senior Lecturer in English involves teaching literature at all levels, including undergraduate courses within the subject, advanced level courses on the Master’s degree programme, and undergraduate courses on the Intercultural Teacher Education programme.
The profile of the subject of English at Södertörn University reflects an intercultural and global perspective, which also characterises the orientation of the courses in English literature. We seek a Senior Lecturer, preferably specializing in 19th century and/or early 20th century literature, who can actively contribute to and develop this profile, and who can assume a leadership role in the development of the subject’s research portfolio. Administrative tasks are included in the Senior Lecturer position, and thus a good working knowledge of spoken and written Swedish is important.
Eligibility
An applicant is eligible to be considered for the position of Senior Lecturer if s/he has completed a doctoral degree in English-language Literature, has corresponding academic or professional competence that is of direct relevance to the employment specifics, and can demonstrate pedagogical competence at undergraduate and graduate levels. For this position, it is also required that an applicant have documented experience of post-doctoral, scholarly research projects.
A completed course in university pedagogy or corresponding pedagogical competence is required.
Selection criteria
Applicants for the position will be assessed on the basis of their competence in the required areas, specified below. Scholarly competence should be documented in the applicant’s research portfolio. Pedagogical competence, in the form of teaching experience as well as course and program development, should be documented and supported. A written account of the applicant’s own pedagogical philosophy is also required. The applicant should furthermore have the personal qualities necessary to perform well in the position.
Scholarly competence will be accorded greater value than pedagogical competence.
For this position, the following selection criteria have been determined (in order of importance):
• Documented scholarly competence in the study of English-language literature, focusing on intercultural, multicultural or post-colonial analyses
• Documented scholarly competence in English-language literature, focusing on 19th century or early 20th century literature
• Pedagogical competence and teaching experience on undergraduate and advanced levels
• Documented experience of academic leadership and research project leadership
• Experience with cross-disciplinary cooperation
• Documented ability to cooperate
• Administrative experience

The advertised position is for permanent employment with an initial start date to be negotiated.
A trial period may be imposed.
