Senior Lecturer in Health Economics

Research and education at The School of Community Medicine and Public Health spans global public health, general medicine, occupational medicine, environmental medicine, social medicine, drug use and drug policy. We also conduct teaching and research in nutritional epidemiology, insurance medicine, health economics, biostatistics and registry epidemiology. We develop interdisciplinary research within the UN's global goals for sustainable development, with a focus on goals 3 (health) and 8 (economic development).
The health economics group within the department conducts teaching and research related to this topic. The teaching of health economics takes place primarily within the department's programs and courses, as well as within quantitative methods courses in postgraduate education. The research is primarily applied and often takes place in collaboration with clinical research groups. We work with both large health register data and data from clinical trials, and collaborate closely with Region Västra Götaland.

Subject area description
Health Economics at the Institute of Medicine has a primary focus on economic evaluations of interventions in healthcare and public health (namely, cost-minimization analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis and cost-benefit analysis). The subject of health economics is also concerned with econometric analyses of regional, national and international policies in healthcare and their effects on the population's health and healthcare costs.
Duties
Job assignments include teaching in Swedish and English in Health Economics in one or more of Sahlgrenska Academy's study programs, primarily at the master's level. The work also includes conducting applied health economics research relevant to the department’s research activity. The successful candidate will also collaborate with Region Västra Götaland as a consultant on priority issues and HTA work (Health Technology Assessment), as well as evaluation and follow-up of the region's care process from a health economics perspective. The position also includes consultation and research collaboration with several clinical research groups within Sahlgrenska Academy, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Region Västra Götaland. The successful candidate is also expected to seek external research funding both as a principal applicant and as part of other research groups. After three years at least 25% of the position is expected to be financed via external research grants. Some administrative tasks are also included in the employment, with regard to the consultations and similar activities. Applicants who do not have Swedish as their native language will be given the opportunity to learn Swedish within two years of the start of employment.
Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
Requirements for the position are a completed doctorate in health economics, economics applied in health and healthcare or in another field with relevance to health economics. Demonstrated pedagogical competence and ability to teach in English are also required.
Applicants who are not Swedish-speaking are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years of starting the employment.
Assessment criteria
The asseement criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
Pedagogical and scientific competence, as well as the capability to cooperate and collaborate, are equally important for employment.
When assessing scientific competence, emphasis will be placed on health economics publications in peer-reviewed international journals and the quality of the applicant's proposed health economics research program and its relevance to the department. Greater weight will be given to research on economic evaluations in healthcare and public health (namely, cost-minimization analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, cost-benefit analysis) and research related to econometric analyses of policies in healthcare. Experience in research using data from clinical trials, observational data/registry data, and research using simulation models is advantageous. Demonstrated ability to obtain external research grants is also an advantage.
When assessing pedagogical competence, emphasis will be placed on documented training, ability, and described interest, as well as experience implementing successful health economics teaching to student groups with or without prior knowledge of health economics, national economics or statistics and to professional groups within healthcare. Experience as a course coordinator and having taken the initiative to create and develop courses are advantageous.
When assessing the capability for cooperation and collaboration, emphasis will be placed on documented experience in health economics consulting, priority work within Swedish health regions, experience in health economic evaluations of care interventions within Swedish health regions and developing of HTA reports (Health Technology Assessment). The capability for and described interest in successful collaboration with other professions in health economics research and evaluation are advantageous.
