Senior lecturer in Mathematical Optimization

Senior lecturer in Mathematical Optimization

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher and teacher in mathematical optimization to join us as a senior lecturer, to strengthen our research groups in mathematical optimization and computational mathematics at the division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Researchers at the division conduct internationally recognized research in areas such as the theory and implementation of finite element methods, mathematical optimization, inverse wave propagation problems, kinetic equations, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric integration, biomathematics, spatial statistics, and data science.

Current research within mathematical optimization at the division focuses on modelling of applied optimization problems as well as developing theory and algorithms for the solution of these models. We look forward to your contribution to our research in the area of mathematical optimization, interpreted in a broad sense.

Current teaching in mathematical optimization on the undergraduate and master’s level at the division includes linear, non-linear, and integer optimization, as well as decomposition methods for large-scale optimization.

Information about the department
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is a fully integrated department with Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg as principals. The department has about 200 faculty and staff and is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries. We teach a broad spectrum of courses across programs at the two universities. Internationally high-level research is pursued in both pure and applied mathematics, as well as in mathematical statistics.

Major responsibilities
To conduct independent research in collaboration with our researchers as well as with external collaborators. To actively apply for external funding for your research projects.

To teach mathematics at all levels, including supervision of undergraduate, master, and PhD students, as well as to participate in the development of the courses. There will also be some departmental committee work.

Our academic year is divided into four quarters, and it is usually possible to organize the teaching assignments so that one or two quarters are free of teaching.

Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.

Qualifications
The position of senior lecturer requires a doctoral degree in mathematics or in another relevant field. A good record of academic research is required. Your research should be in mathematical optimization, while applications of the mathematical research to various areas of science, engineering, medicine, operations research, and economics etc. are meritorious. Documented teaching experience from higher education is required for the position.

Additionally, the following qualifications are meritorious:
- postdoctoral positions or corresponding, especially at another institution or organization than where the doctoral studies were performed,
- experience of teaching in mathematical optimization;
- experience of program management,
- shown ability to attract external funding.

A complete list of qualifications for the senior lecturer position can be found in section 7.2 of the Rules of Procedure.

We require all our teaching faculty to have education in higher education pedagogics in accordance with SUHF’s recommendations. If you have not had the possibility to take courses on teaching and learning in higher education, you will be required to take such courses at Chalmers within the first two years of employment.

The position requires good verbal and written communication skills in English. If needed, Chalmers offers Swedish language courses, with the aim that you will be able to teach in Swedish within two years.
