Information about the research
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of the largest in Northern Europe, comprising more than 100 employees in a joint department of Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. The department has three divisions: Analysis and Probability Theory, Algebra and Geometry, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, reflecting our broad expertise in research and education at a high international level. The department is affiliated with the Chalmers Areas of Advance, and is an important partner of other sciences and industrial projects.
The research at the department include a wide variety of subjects; algebraic geometry, number theory, algebra and representation theory, harmonic analysis, computational mathematics and optimization, discrete mathematics and probability theory, complex analysis, functional analysis, kinetic theory, mathematical physics, biomathematics, mathematical and applied statistics. The department prides itself in its recognized excellence in mathematics research. Faculty research generates extensive support from national and international funding agencies. Our aim is to continue to develop our active and thriving research environment.
Expertise in mathematical education, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, is highly valued at the department. The faculty teaches a vast spectrum of courses across programs at the two universities, ranging from large, fundamental classes to advanced graduate level courses. The department offers master programs in mathematics, mathematical statistics, financial mathematics, applied mathematics, and advanced engineering mathematics. We are continuously seeking opportunities for improvement, for instance by exploiting new technology and mathematical software in connection with teaching. Our goal is to be a leader in mathematics teaching at the top international levels.
The department is proud of its friendly and supportive work environment and actively and continually works to ensure that all members prosper and are included in the overreaching goals and activities of the department.
