The Institute is organised according to academic areas made up by interdisciplinary profiles: Care in long-term conditions; The Life Context and Health Promotion; Diagnostics, Acute and Critical Care and Learning and Leadership for Health Care Professionals. The purpose of having academic areas is to integrate the Institute’s joint competence to promote quality in education, research and collaboration.
The Institute of Health and Care Sciences offers several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for nurses, radiographers, midwives, and specialist nurses. The basic training courses for nurses and radiographers lead to a professional degree as well as a bachelor's degree. The training of midwives and the different courses for specialist nurses lead to a professional registration in combination with a master's degree. All professional programmes lead to a professional registration. Moreover, contract education and freestanding courses are offered at an advanced level, offering the possibility to continue studying towards a master's degree in one of the Institute’s main subjects; nursing, reproductive and perinatal health, radiography and health care pedagogics. The Institute also offers the possibility to study for a PhD degree in Health Care Sciences.

Nursing
Subject area description
Nursing science involves developing the knowledge of health and how to have good life despite the existence of illness or disability. It also involves the study of a peaceful and dignified death. Nursing is based on the needs and problems related to health and ill health and to daily life, but also on people's resources and ability to handle problems.
In nursing, it is not ill health/illness/disability per se, but people's reactions and interpretations of their illness that are in focus. Crucial to the care situation is a close relationship between the nurse, patient and relatives.
