The Department of Oto-rhino-laryngology, Institute of Clinical Sciences, runs basic courses in term 9 of the medical programme. As many as 280 students primarily receive a case-based education with hands-on simulation and clinical work. The department is also involved in teaching and OSCE examinations of doctors from third countries who are applying for a Swedish medical licence, i.e. fast track. Since 2019, the department has run a further education course in ENT diseases for Swedish and foreign students on the medical programme. The department also runs extensive clinical research activities with regular part-time seminars, doctoral defences and recurrent research meetings. These research activities primarily focus on clinical patient-oriented research in oto-rhino-laryngology.

Subject are description
The subject of oto-rhino-laryngology is a surgical speciality which also encompasses medical questions within the fields of infection, inflammation and tumours, as well as investigations of neurological disease states, first and foremost otology and dizziness. Oto-rhino-laryngology comprises both acute and planned activities with collaboration in conjunction primarily with plastic surgery, specialised dentistry, neurology, neurosurgery, anaesthesia and paediatrics. Education in the subject of otorhinolaryngology takes place in term 9 of the Medical Programme at the University of Gothenburg. The part of the speciality of oto-rhino-laryngology that is taught on the course relates to knowledge of otorhinolaryngology corresponding to the work done by a doctor at general practice (GP) level and is defined through a nationally developed core curriculum. The ENT (ear, nose and throat) Department runs nationally and internationally competitive clinical research in the field of otorhinolaryngology and the department also collaborates with other departments at the Sahlgrenska Academy and research centres in Sweden and abroad.


Job assignments
The main tasks are teaching the students oto-rhino-laryngology in term 9 of the Medical Programme at the University of Gothenburg. The work includes responsibility for the clinical education unit for medical students, as the training in a clinical setting involves patients, under the supervision of doctors and other healthcare staff. The position comprises course responsibility, course planning, examinations, administration, development work and following the development of knowledge within otorhinolaryngology. The position also includes conducting research on the main subject.


Eligibility
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.


A doctor’s degree and proven pedagogic skills. In order to qualify, the applicant must also have a Swedish medical licence and specialist skills in otorhinolaryngology. The ability to teach in both Swedish and English is a requirement.
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.


The first basis for assessment is pedagogic skills. When pedagogic skills are assessed, special emphasis will be placed on documented experience of teaching medical students in otorhinolaryngology and a proven ability for supervision. Experience of course responsibility and pedagogic development work is a merit.


The second basis for assessment is scientific skills and will be assessed by evaluating the quality of the applicant’s publications in peer-reviewed publications, national and international grants received in competition and the ability to lead a group of researchers.


Clinical experience and skills, together with the position of associate professor (docent), are a particular merit. Administrative skills and the ability to collaborate and interact are also a merit. A documented ability to collaborate with health care is valuable.

The employment is a general temporary employment during two years, part-time 50 % and is located at The Institute of Clinical Sciences.
