The School of Economics at Linnaeus University conducts research and education in business economics, national economics, statistics as well as law and tourism science. We contribute with entrepreneurial thinking and sustainable solutions to complex organizational and societal problems. The position is hosted by the Department of Economics and Statistics at Linnaeus University, which is an international academic environment in Växjö and Kalmar. We offer undergraduate (BA), graduate (MA) and PhD level courses with dedicated teachers at the forefront of economics and statistics research.
Most of the research at the department is conducted under the theme “Equality of Opportunity and Big Data Analysis” which is oriented towards applied microeconomics and policy analysis, statistical learning, analysis of high-dimensional data and multivariate statistical methods. This hiring is part of a broader strategy of the department to develop this research group into a new leading research environment for applied economics and statistics, encompassing socially relevant policy analysis, with a particular focus on methods of modern data science. We also develop statistical education modules and programs in business analytics, financial statistics, and statistical learning. The department provides an excellent research environment, well embedded in the Scandinavian research networks, as well as attractive career opportunities.
Job assignment
The position involves teaching diverse statistical subjects at varying levels, including distant and lifelong learning courses. The lecturer is expected to conducting research in statistics, both applied and theoretical, along with active involvement in course development within the domain of modern data science and the establishment of courses in business statistics, business analytics, and financial analytics.
Eligibility
Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer are individuals who have been awarded a PhD in statistics or possess equivalent scientific skills. They should also demonstrate teaching expertise in statistics, with their teaching skills well-documented in a manner that allows for an assessment of the quality of their teaching activities.
In addition, candidates are expected to have documented research skills in developing and applying methods of modern statistical analysis (e.g., statistical learning/machine learning, high-dimensional statistics) and portfolio choice management. Moreover, they should possess documented skills in applying this knowledge to business, financial statistics, or economics research.
The candidate should be fluent in English since most teaching is conducted in English.
Assessment criteria and qualifications
The School of School of Business and Economics strives for a balance between research and education in all employments. In the assessment of the applicants, equal importance will therefore be given to scientific and pedagogical skills.
For appointments to senior lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
• High proficiency in teaching, including the capacity to design, develop, and lead educational initiatives across various levels using diverse teaching methodologies.
• Documented research skills in statistical methods in finance, portfolio management theory, financial time series, and the financial applications of statistics.
• Documented experience in research or teaching in modern data analysis and computer-intensive methods, as well as knowledge of R, SPSS and Stata.
• Active collaboration with fellow researchers.
Terms of employment
Temporary employment (one-year), full time.
Starting date of the position: Spring 2024.
