The Institute of Latin American Studies, now the The Nordic Institute of Latin American Studies, was founded in 1951 at the Stockholm School of Economics. In 1969, it was transformed into an independent state institute for Latin American studies and was given the character of a national institution with the right to initiate Nordic co-operation. In 1977, it became part of Stockholm University and since the year 2000 it is affiliated to the Faculty of Humanities and is part of the Humanities area at Stockholm University, now as a subject within the Department of Romance Studies and Classics, where the institute has education at undergraduate and advanced level. The purpose of the Institute of Latin American Studies is to conduct, with a focus on Latin America: 1) research in social and cultural sciences, 2) education oriented towards social and cultural sciences, 3) documentation activities, and 4) seminars, lectures and symposia. The institute also maintains contacts with departments within and outside Stockholm University that operate in the same scientific field.

Main responsibilities
This employment includes teaching in the following modules at the undergraduate level:


Sustainable development in an unequal region 7.5 credits

Thematic and geographical specialization 7.5 credits

Globalization and new strategies for economic development 7.5 credits

Latin American thinking 7.5 credits

Media in Latin America 7.5 credits

Essay seminars

Teaching includes giving lectures and leading seminars, as well as having course responsibility and participating in teacher meetings and conferences. Supervision and examination of a number of essays will also be included in the responsibilities.

Qualification requirements
Eligible applicants for the position of senior lecturer should have demonstrated teaching expertise (mainly at university level) and hold a PhD in the field of social sciences with a focus on Latin America, or have equivalent scientific competence in a related field. Proven very good proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Teaching proficiency must be well documented in a manner that its quality can be assessed. It is an advantage to have experience of teaching the above-mentioned or equivalent courses and to have teacher training.


The applicant must have the ability to cooperate with colleagues as well as other abilities that are required in order to successfully meet the demands of the position.

Assessment criteria
In the selection among eligible applicants, emphasis will be on scientific and pedagogical skills. The greatest emphasis is on pedagogical skill. When assessing the pedagogical skills, experience of planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching as well as of supervision and examination will be taken into account. In this recruitment, the university will primarily consider the applicants who, after an overall assessment of competence, merit, skill and personal abilities, have the best conditions to carry out current work tasks and contribute to a positive development of the department’s activities. Applicants must be able to provide references upon request.


Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training of at least 15 credits in teaching and learning in higher education or equivalent knowledge is an advantage.


Terms of employment
The employment is a part-time position comprising 55 % (935 hours) distributed as 80 % during the spring term 2021 and 30 % during the autumn term 2021. Furhtermore, it is limited between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021. The call is intended to cover a temporary need in teaching. No research time is included in the employment.
