The Department of Molecular Sciences
Applications are invited for an open position of Associate Professor (University Senior Lecturer) in Biochemistry at the Department of Molecular Sciences, SLU, Uppsala.
Together with the Departments of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology, Plant Biology, and of Aquatic Resources, the Department of Molecular Sciences forms an inspiring research environment in the BioCenter on the Ultuna campus in Uppsala. There is expertise in chemistry, biotechnology, plant biology, mycology, plant pathology, microbiology, food science, computational genetics and aquatic ecology as well as strong infrastructure such as plant cultivation facilities, advanced microscopy and molecular biology, X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. The Department of Molecular Sciences conducts research and teaching in inorganic, physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry, natural product chemistry, food science and microbiology at basic, advanced and postgraduate levels. A successful candidate selected for this position will join The Plant Catabolism Laboratories – a cluster of collaborating groups pursuing research on three broad and interconnected topics: autophagy, biomolecular condensates, and proteolysis.

Subject Area
The subject area for the position covers biochemistry with a focus on plant development and stress resistance.
Duties
The candidate should within the subject area
• develop and lead successful research
• develop and manage/lead teaching in biochemistry at basic and advance level, including doctoral level
• supervise doctoral students and contribute to the development of the postgraduate subjects biology and chemistry
• collaborate on the subject of biochemistry both within the department and with other departments at SLU
• develop and maintain national and international networks including researchers, industry and business
• communicate research and research findings to society
• apply for external research funding in competition.
Qualifications
The successful applicant shall:
• hold a doctorate in biochemistry or related relevant subject
• be scientifically proficient in the subject of the employment
• be pedagogically skilled
• have good knowledge of English.
Assessment criteria
Assessment of the candidate’s suitability for employment as associate professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the qualifications required for the position.
When assessing the candidate’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching and research expertise respectively.
The assessment of research expertise will take into account the following:
• completed research initiatives and ongoing research
• ability to independently initiate and conduct innovative research
• received external research funding in competition.
The assessment of teaching expertise will take into account the following:
• ability to plan, implement, follow up and evaluate teaching in the subject
• supervision and examination at doctoral level
• ability to integrate research and a scientific approach in teaching
• pedagogic education for university teachers or equivalent.
Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s expertise in
• developing and managing activities and staff within the academy
• communication and collaboration
• collaboration with relevant stakeholders and society
• the ability to distribute research findings and development projects
Competence in relevant research areas, such as autophagy, biomolecular condensates and proteolysis is meritorious.
Good knowledge of Swedish is a merit.
The position is offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is judged to have the best conditions to carry out and develop specified tasks and contribute to a development of the subject area.
Other information
An appointment as an Associate Professor (University Senior Lecturer) at the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences provides guaranteed funding for own research corresponding to 35% of a standard salary for a university lecturer at SLU. In addition, the department guarantees the equivalent of 15% salary funding towards research, teaching or administrative work. A university lecturer is expected to finance the remaining 50% through external research funds or additional teaching efforts.
* Swedish “universitetslektor”, a tenured position approximately equivalent to Senior lecturer (UK) or Associate professor (US). The applicant who is offered this employment at SLU will be employed as Senior lecturer.
