Stockholm University has been offering academic courses in Romance languages since the late 1920s. The first professorship in Romance Languages was established in 1937. The undergraduate courses of the Department of Romance Languages were divided into four languages in the 1960s: French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Today, the subject of Portuguese is part of the Department of Romance studies and Classics, which also includes research and education in Latin American studies, Latin and Greek. At the department, approximately 100 students study Portuguese at the undergraduate and advanced levels. In total ten dissertations in Portuguese have been defended at Stockholm University. Stockholm University is the only university in the country that offers degrees in Portuguese at the M.A. and PhD level. The Department's researchers participate in several leading research areas at the faculty: second language acquisition and multilingualism, romance linguistics and literature. The total number of employees at the department is more than 80, including doctoral students.
Main responsibilities
This employment includes teaching Portuguese at the following courses at the undergraduate level:
• Language structure and introduction to linguistics 7,5 credits (spring term and autumn term)
• Oral and written proficiency 7,5 credits (spring term and autumn term)
• Mediation 5 credits (autumn term)
• Linguistics I 10 credits (autumn term)
• Linguistics II 7,5 credits (autumn term)
Teaching takes place both at campus and online, and includes giving lectures and leading seminars, handling examination and course responsibility and participating in teacher’s meetings and conferences. Supervision and examination of essays may also be included in the responsibilities.
Qualification requirements
Eligible applicants for the position of senior lecturer should have demonstrated pedagogical expertise (mainly at university level) in the subject, and hold a PhD in Portuguese with specialization in linguistics, or have equivalent scientific competence. Proven very good proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Teaching proficiency must be well documented so that its quality can be assessed. It is an advantage to have experience of teaching the above-mentioned or equivalent courses and to have teacher training. It is also an advantage to have a specialization in or good knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese, in order to accommodate the breadth of teaching set out in curricula at the undergraduate level, as well as to meet the demands of students studying Portuguese as part of the bachelor’s program in Latin American Studies.
The applicant must have the ability to cooperate and should demonstrate the general suitability required to meet the demands of the position.
Assessment criteria
In the selection among eligible applicants, emphasis will be on scientific and pedagogical skills. The greatest emphasis is on pedagogical skill. When assessing the pedagogical skills, experience of planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching as well as of supervision and examination will be considered. In this recruitment, the university will primarily consider applicants who, after an overall assessment of competence, merits, skills and personal abilities, have the best conditions to carry out the work tasks in question and contribute to a positive development of the department’s activities. Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage.
Terms of employment
The employment is a temporary employment of 50 % and limited in time from 1 January 2023 to 31 January 2024. The teaching is distributed between 40 % during the spring term of 2023 and 60 % during the autumn term of 2023. This call is intended to cover a temporary need in teaching.
