The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Senior Mechanical Engineer.

Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and with other divisions of the ESS.

The Specialised Technical Services Group provides cryogenic, vacuum and test stand systems for the ESS project consistent with project scope, cost and schedule. Operations of these systems is also the group’s responsibility. The group’s work is designed not only to successfully complete the ESS project but also to enable long term capacity in cryogenics, vacuum and cryomodule development infrastructure for the ESS Laboratory.

Specialised Technical Services is also responsible for all integration, installation and technical utilities within the Accelerator Project. This includes work within the accelerator Tunnel, Gallery and Support buildings. Staff members of STS act as the interface between the Accelerator Project and Conventional Facilities for areas such as space and utility requirements. Group members also provide support to ESS in the areas of electrical and cooling system modeling and development of the grounding system of the accelerator complex.

Main responsibilities
As Senior Mechanical Engineer you will work with managers and lead engineers from different accelerator systems (ACCSYS) work packages to develop a mechanical plant that meets the needs of the ACCSYS project. That includes providing mechanical engineering support for the installation of equipment in the tunnel and gallery, assist in the documentation of mechanical systems installed as part of the ACCSYS Accelerator Infrastructure and Installation work package (WP9), coordinate and organize dataflow from BLED database to 3D model ensuring that components are prospering placed to meet accelerator requirements, provide support for accelerator technical systems covered by WP9 and perform other common tasks that are relevant to the position.

You know how to apply your expertise and technology skills when faced with challenging problems or situations and are happy to share your knowledge and findings with others. You also work hard on achieving your professional goals and objectives with enthusiasm and are willing to develop your technical and behavioural competencies continuously.

You have a MSc in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, and previous experience from working in large national or multi-national laboratories with knowledge of accelerator physics and engineering. You have working knowledge of accelerator and detector subsystems including: power systems, RF, instrumentation, controls, vacuum, magnets, cryogenics and cooling systems, and are familiar with finite element and 3D CAD software packages. Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
