Competitive salary and benefits
Build a long-term career by unlocking opportunities for lifelong learning
Build outstanding capabilities in a place that promotes learning agility and offers development opportunities. We never stand still so you'll have the chance to constantly grow your abilities, skills and knowledge. Here we are a fusion of ambitious and exciting work, in an energising and inspiring environment.
Data drives our decision making. It's at the core of everything we do. You are encouraged to adopt and push new research, without fear of failure.
What you'll do
As a Chemical Toxicologist you will operate at the interface between medicinal chemistry design and drug safety, working alongside project teams. In this role you will apply your knowledge of chemical toxicology to influence the design quality of drug discovery projects. You will develop a scientific understanding of mechanisms leading to compound-related toxicity through collaborations with your AstraZeneca colleagues, as well as key external partners.
Key Responsibilities:
*
Work with discovery safety scientists, project toxicologists and medicinal chemists to ensure an efficient design and selection of safe compounds.
*
Provide early hazard assessments to support safety hypotheses and facilitate the alignment of appropriate safety screening cascades to contextualize risks.
*
Build strong links with the project chemistry teams to ensure that safety considerations are embedded into series selection and compound design decisions.
*
Drive innovation in both internal projects and on external collaborations by identifying and incorporating industry leading scientific developments
*
Improve your own and AstraZeneca's reputation through peer-reviewed scientific publications and oral or poster presentations.
Essential criteria
*
PhD in organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry.
*
Postdoctoral experience as a medicinal chemist in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment.
*
Track record of compound design, problem solving and successful delivery as a medicinal chemist.
*
Good knowledge of common compound-related safety risks facing projects and their potential solutions.
*
Awareness of the latest advances in the field through evaluation of the current literature, scientific contacts and scientific meetings in order to ensure competitiveness.
*
In-depth understanding of the broader chemical sciences, how these collaborate with each other and their relative contributions to successful project delivery.
*
Strong leadership, influencing, partner management and team-working skills.
*
Ability to represent the subject area through strong communication and to impact or lead cross-discipline project teams.
Desirable criteria
*
Direct experience of leading medicinal chemistry approaches to the design of molecules with specific decreased safety liabilities based on structural and physicochemical property based design.
*
Relevant strategic project leadership experience, especially at the interface between medicinal chemistry and toxicology to negotiate the successful delivery of high quality of drug candidates.
*
Good working knowledge of pharmacokinetics and relevant computational techniques such as structure-based drug design, molecular dynamics, molecular docking, quantitative structure activity relationships, pharmacodynamics and chemoinformatics.
