Arbetsbeskrivning

Senior Research Engineer in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, ref 1031-10

The Division of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering within the Department of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering at LTU has research groups in soil mechanics, and rock engineering and rock mechanics.Soil mechanics deals with the mechanics of granular masses and their use in various structures.Dredging in harbours and waterways for continued increased use of marine transport as an efficient and environmentally smart means of transport involves handling large amounts of soil-like dredged materials.Much of the dredged sediment is more or less contaminated. In order to handle this type of sediment safely and sustainably in the long term, methods are now being developed to stabilise the sediments and to enable their use in harbour structures.LTU is working on these methods with several collaborators, including harbours and research institutes from countries bordering the Baltic Sea.This collaborative effort falls within the framework of a project called SMOCS, which is financed by the EU.

We are looking for a senior research engineer to work with us on this project. The position is temporary for a maximum of two years from start date.

Duties

Principal duties include working within the framework of the SMOCS project with issues involving long-term environmental impact on surrounding land areas and water environments from stabilised dredged sediment when used in earthen structures.Duties also include participating in efforts to transfer knowledge and information on the stabilisation technique to harbours, authorities and researchers within the framework of the SMOCS project. The work involves visits to project participants and test sites.

Reporting and presenting results is an important duty and publication in international forums is essential. The position entails a relatively large amount of travelling, mainly around the Baltic Sea.Some supervision of master's students is required.Essential duties include contact with project participants and communication of results internally and externally.

Qualifications
To qualify as a senior research engineer, you must have an undergraduate degree or equivalent scholarly expertise or have some other significant proficiency in the stated subject content and tasks.

Good speaking and writing skills in Swedish and English are required.Good interpersonal skills, experience with formulating project applications for research programs and preparing project plans together with industrial organisations are assets.Experience with project management.Experience holding leadership positions is an asset.Ability to present material in front of large groups is an asset.

Start date is negotiable.
