Senior Research Scientist - Medicinal Chemistry

We have a temporary opening for a Senior Research Scientist within our Medicinal Chemistry department in the area of Respiratory & Immunology (R&I). You will get the opportunity to join a highly creative and collaborative discovery team embedded in a science driven environment, leveraging innovative Organic and Medicinal Chemistry to invent novel drug candidates. The position is placed at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.


We are searching for an Organic/Medicinal chemist interested in drug discovery research across small molecules or Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs). What you'll do:

As a Senior Research Scientist in the Early R&I Medicinal Chemistry department you will play an important role in advancing drug discovery projects from target validation to preclinical phase. You will join a highly integrated discovery team leveraging innovative medicinal chemistry to invent novel medicines. Your focus will be on synthesis, characterization and design of drug molecules and you will be expected to lead by example with integrity, to follow the science and collaborate across boundaries. You will ensure uptake of recent scientific developments into project teams and generate creative ideas in the design of novel molecules. You will also be expected to share scientific findings to a broader internal and external audience and to publish your results.


We are looking for a person with strong scientific curiosity and a solid background in Organic Chemistry. You should be up-to-date with recent trends in synthetic chemistry and have a continuous drive to develop skills in Medicinal Chemistry. We are looking forward to a candidate with excellent communication skills and a strong ability to collaborate across disciplines.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

* Support Early R&I's drug discovery programs through design and synthesis of potential drug molecules
* Provide state-of-the-art synthetic organic chemistry to drug discovery projects, delivering high quality drug molecules and tool compounds
* Collect, analyze and interpret project data. Propose hypotheses and plans how to test them
* Collaborate with the chemistry team in the development, planning and prioritization of route design, share findings and jointly solve scientific questions in the projects
* Drive R&I´s scientific reputation by presenting and publishing your results within the department, across AZ and externally
* Follow safety requirements and all AZ corporate responsibility policies


Essential for the role:
* PhD in synthetic Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Biochemistry
* In-depth scientific knowledge and recent practical experience in the area of synthetic chemistry
* Up-to-date with the application of modern purification and analytical techniques
* A proven track record of delivery from own experimental work
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills
* Professional experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry is a benefit
