We are looking to temporarily hire a Senior Research Scientist with focus on Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry, in the area of Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmune (RIA). You will work within AstraZeneca's RIA Medicinal Chemistry department in the Biopharmaceutical R&D unit.

You will join a highly creative and collaborative discovery team embedded in a science driven environment, using innovative Organic and Medicinal Chemistry to invent novel drug candidates.

Your focus will be on synthesis, purification and characterization of lead molecules from target validation to lead optimization phase. You will ensure uptake of novel scientific developments in the area of synthetic organic chemistry into AstraZeneca Medicinal Chemistry teams and projects.

We believe that you will influence compound design by highlighting opportunities based on your experiences and recent progress in synthetic or medicinal chemistry. You will also get the opportunity and be encouraged to share scientific findings and to identify publication opportunities.

We believe that you are a person with rigorous scientific curiosity. You are practically oriented and enjoy driving science from the lab. You are up-to-date with recent trends in synthetic chemistry and has a constant aim to develop new skills within Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry. You have a proven scientific background in Organic Chemistry with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem-solving attitude and delivery focus.



Major Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide state-of-the-art Synthetic Organic Chemistry to projects at all stages of drug discovery delivering high quality drug molecules and tool compounds
* Apply synthetic chemistry with an efficient idea generation attitude, proactively troubleshoot problems and maintain a clear focus and impact on project progression
* Provide a significant level of expertise in synthetic chemistry methodology, purification and analytical sciences to ensure the delivery of high-quality molecules within agreed timelines
* Collaborate with the chemistry team in the development, planning and prioritization of route design, share common intermediates, findings and potential issues
* Provide quality input into compound design depending on project need
* Follow safety requirements and all AZ corporate responsibility policies
* Drive RIA Medicinal Chemistry's scientific reputation by identifying and contributing to publication opportunities internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners

Essential Requirements

* PhD (or equivalent experience) in synthetic Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Biochemistry; professional experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry is a plus
* In-depth scientific knowledge and practical experience in the area of synthetic chemistry
* Up-to-date with the application of modern purification and analytical techniques
* A proven track record of delivery from own experimental work
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills
* Good knowledge of the pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process
