Senior Researcher - EP 2022

Senior Researcher - EP 2022

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking a Senior Researcher for a project that aims to focus international attention on practical steps to address the negative impact of today’s environmental crises so as to improve tomorrow’s prospects for peace and security.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is one of the world’s foremost peace research institutions and has done much in recent years to bring the linkage between climate change and insecurity to a higher place on the agendas of policy, of practice in international development, and of research. The year 2022 marks the 50thanniversary of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, the first major inter-government conference on the environment. Connected to this anniversary and to developments in both the global climate and the global security equation, SIPRI is planning a major international report, provisionally entitled Environment of Peace 2022 (EP 2022).

The Senior Researcher will co-lead the process of research and lead the writing of the report that are the core of the EP 2022.

The Senior Researcher will be responsible for:

The primary responsibility of the Senior Researcher is to deliver solidly grounded and well written, high-quality research on problems thrown up by the linkage between climate and other environmental change and insecurity, as well as appropriate policy responses, and to do so within a demanding schedule.

The Senior Researcher will also be expected and has the responsibility to play a key part in the outreach for the report after its publication. This will likely include interviews, panel presentations and lectures in a variety of settings and locations across a six-month period.

In order to shape the research effort and complete the report, the Senior Researcher will guide the research and writing efforts of colleagues, both juniors and peers including consultants.

Main tasks

• Designing, conducting, and writing up high-quality research for the EP 2022 report;
• Guiding the research and writing of others, to the same ends and with the same high standards;
• Participating in the outreach effort to communicate the research, its findings and ensuing recommendations to an international audience;
• Mentoring junior staff engaged in EP 2022;
• Taking part in the collective life of the Institute.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following experience:

• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at Master or Doctoral level, or publications to Doctoral degree standard.
• 5 years of experience as a researcher initiating and carrying out her/his own research projects;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Strong knowledge of the broad issues relating to climate change and insecurity including, if possible, on the linkages between climate action and peacebuilding;
• Proven ability to work and deliver in small teams;
• Proven fluency and clarity in written English, with further language proficiency a useful advantage.

Experience from working in multilateral organisations and from participating in or influencing policy process is not essential but is advantageous.

Contract period

Starting as soon as possible. The appointment will be a fixed term contract to end of 2022 with possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The salary package will be negotiated individually.

The position is based in Stockholm and, as with all research posts at SIPRI, requires willingness and availability to travel for the purposes of, inter alia, field research, fundraising and presenting and disseminating research findings. This requirement must, of course, be balanced by the need to be present in the institute and taking part in activities there, as well as by the larger need for work-life balance.

How to apply

Candidates should submit

• A one-page cover letter in English, detailing your qualifications and interests in the subject area;
• A full CV in English with information about your educational background, relevant experience, skills, acquisition record, major publications;
• Two writing samples;
• The names of two potential referees and their contact information.
