(Senior) Researcher, Peace Operations and Conflict Management Programme

SIPRI’s Peace Operations and Conflict Management Programme is hiring a (Senior) Researcher to lead the work on gender and peace operations and conflict management.

Context

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. The (Senior) Researcher position

SIPRI is specifically interested in recruiting a Researcher or a Senior Researcher with experience and knowledge on peace operations, conflict management and the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The position is based in Stockholm but might involve occasional travel.

Tasks and responsibilities

The Senior Researcher or Researcher will:


• Lead, under the guidance of the Programme Director, research within the Gender pillar of the Peace Operations and Conflict Management Programme;
• Conduct and write high-quality research on the Women, Peace and Security agenda in peace operations and conflict management;
• Disseminate research to various audiences through research papers, journal articles, reports, policy briefs and other outlets;
• Communicate (team) research findings by producing shorter written outputs, presenting in meetings, through social media and giving interviews;
• Collaborate with the Programme Director and other researchers in the programme on the other work streams;
• Liaise with key policy actors;
• Contribute to the fundraising of the programme, and the preparation of proposals to secure future funding for research carried out within the programme; and
• Contribute to a pleasant and intellectually stimulating work environment at the Institute.

If hired as a Senior Researcher the tasks and responsibilities of the position also include:


• Develop, under the guidance of the Programme Director, the Gender pillar of the Peace Operations and Conflict Management Programme;
• Lead, under the guidance of the Programme Director, the fundraising efforts for the Gender pillar of the programme;
• Collaborate with the Programme Director on mentoring and managing staff delivering on the programme’s agenda; and
• Collaborate with the Programme Director on budgeting and financial management for the research within the programme.

Requirements

The (Senior) Researcher should be a top-class researcher on gender in the context of peace operations and conflict management and familiar with quantitative and qualitative research. The (Senior) Researcher should also have talent for communication and a profound interest in research, including providing policy relevant analysis. They should be a team player with an interest in the more practical issues related to project management. All SIPRI staff are expected to have a commitment to SIPRI’s values and mission, and to contribute to the life of the institute.

When starting in post, hired as a Researcher, the successful candidate should have the following experience and skills:


• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at Doctoral level, or Masters with publications to Doctoral degree standard;
• Minimum of three years' experience as a researcher, carrying out their own research projects on issues related to topics relevant for the post;
• A record of publications on peace, conflict, stability and fragility issues in relation to peace operations and conflict management, as well as the Women, Peace and Security agenda that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Experience and interest in providing policy relevant analysis;
• Experience in planning and organizing (high-level) events; and
• Fluency in oral and written English and preferably French.

If hired as a Senior Researcher, the successful candidate should in addition have the following experience and skills:


• Minimum of five years' experience as a researcher, initiating and carrying out their own research projects on issues related to topic relevant for the post;
• Experience of mentoring and managing researchers and research assistants; and
• Good track record of successful fundraising and managing budgets.

Contract period

The contract period will initially last for two years with the possibility of extension. The post is full-time. Subject to any restrictions on travel related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden, when employment starts. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
