Senior Researcher / Researcher in Data Intensive Radio Astronomy

Senior Researcher / Researcher in Data Intensive Radio Astronomy

Arbetsbeskrivning

We seek a Researcher/Senior Researcher for a permanent position in Data intensive Radio Astronomy. As part of the Observational support unit at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) you will conduct your own astrophysical research related to SKA precursor/pathfinder telescopes and also shoulder an important role as scientific leader in the establishment of the Swedish SKA regional centre (SRC) node. Significant computing resources and interferometry expertise already exist at OSO, but your own interest in developing supporting computing infrastructure will be imperative. The environment at OSO and Chalmers provides excellent opportunities to collaborate with the interferometry experts in our Nordic ALMA Regional Centre Node (part of the same unit), astronomers from the Astronomy and Plasma Physics division and/or other Chalmers researchers; for example in developing machine learning (ML)/ artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for radio astronomy (a Chalmers team recently came a close runner-up in the second SKA Data Challenge). Within Chalmers there are ample opportunities for professional and leadership development and there are possibilities to access additional research funding sources, including for research start-up funding (see 'We offer' below).

About the position
You will be expected to conduct your own astronomy research using large data sets from SKA precursor/pathfinder radio telescopes making use of the Swedish SRC node. About 50% of your time will be spent on the role as scientific leader of the Swedish SRC node, working closely with computer experts at Chalmers in defining the needs of the node and its implementation. You will represent the Swedish SRC node internationally within the SKA project. Via participation in the Swedish SRC node management team you will help ensure that the node fulfills its required functions within the international SRC network and lead Swedish contributions to SKA data challenges. You will also promote the possibilities for data intensive astronomy at centimetre and metre wavelengths within Swedish astronomy and support other Swedish users of SKA pathfinder and precursor radio telescopes. Teaching duties are not part of the position.

Information about the Department
The Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) department at Chalmers hosts 80 staff members involved in astrophysics research, the development of instrumentation and data processing techniques to support radio and millimetre astronomy, and the operation of radio telescopes at Onsala Space Observatory. SEE's astronomy related activities are carried out in two of its Divisions; namely the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) Division hosting Sweden's national infrastructure for radio astronomy and the Astronomy and Plasma Physics (AOP) Division. Research and infrastructure activities related to the establishment of Sweden's SKA Regional Centre (SRC) node are led from within OSO's Division/Infrastructure. Delivery of the computer resources and services for this SRC node are being planned in close collaboration with experts within the Chalmers university wide structure (Chalmers e-commons) for research computing support.

Qualifications
Several years of research experience involving the analysis of large interferometric radio astronomy data sets is required. Leadership experience within projects or research teams is considered a strong asset. Other highly valued qualifications include current scientific involvement in projects exploiting large data sets from SKA precursor/pathfinder telescopes (in particular MeerKAT, ASKAP, MWA or LOFAR), experience setting up data processing workflows on large computer systems, experience with applying ML and/or AI techniques for data analysis, and/or experience working with developers of cluster/HPC (High Performance Computing) systems in optimizing processing for science return. It is also meritorious to have a record of working for equality and diversity within the workplace.

This position is advertised at Researcher or Senior researcher level. The selected level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of these levels as well as the specific qualifications expected for each level, please consult our Rules of Procedure – Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty, sections 8.2 and 8.3.

Contract terms
