The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a partnership organization of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. We are currently recruiting for the position of Senior Safety Engineer within the Protection Systems Group at ESS. This is a critical role as you will strongly contribute to designing and implementing safe and reliable Machine Protection Systems, Personnel Safety Systems, as well as Gas Detection Systems; needed to achieve high beam availability for ESS. About the role:
As the successful candidate and future role, you will:
• Be responsible to establish hardware and software design concepts for Machine Protection Systems.
• Contribute to establishing hardware and software design concepts required for Personnel Safety Systems and Gas Safety/Detection Systems.
• Contribute to ensuring these concepts are aligned with ESS Ways of Working.
• Contribute to ensuring technical solutions are state of the art, follow good engineering practices and are compliant with rules, regulations and functional safety standards such as IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.
• Approve technical decisions and drive technical meetings for Machine Protection Systems.
• Review software code and related documentation for Personnel Safety Systems, Gas Safety/Detection, Machine Protection Systems and Target Safety System.
• Ensure test documentation for Machine Protection Systems is completed by performing post execution reviews for Site and Final Integration Test reports and punch lists.
• Actively develop, evaluate and optimize new and innovative ideas related to implementation of complex safety and control functions into safety critical control systems.
• Contribute actively to establishing ESS wide standards and procedures for control systems management.
• Ensure Protection Systems Group ways of working are compliant with developed standards and procedures developed by the Standardization and Architecture Working Group (START). Ensure Protection Systems Group’s requirements are considered and included in START standards and procedures.
• Contribute actively to establishment of common procedures and standards for ESS maintenance and represent Protection Systems Group. Ensure Protection Systems Group’s requirements are considered and included in ESS Maintenance standards and procedures.
About you:
As a recognised expert in your professional discipline, you are someone who can bring:
• Master in Engineering or similar field.
• 10+ years of relevant experience in designing, verifying, commissioning and operating safety critical systems.
• 10+ years of experience in developing safety PLC software.
• 10+ years of experience in electrical control systems design.
• 10+ years of experience with technology evaluation.
• Proven ability to provide new and innovative technological solutions for complex problems.
• 5+ years of experience in the field of developing and evaluating dependable architectures and designs for critical and complex systems.
• Certification in Machine Safety (CMSE).
• Experience in working with complex systems and within a multicultural environment.
• Experience with requirements solicitation and verification.

The position is a permanent, full-time position located in Lund, Sweden.
