The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Senior Technician Mechatronics position.
Description division
The Electrical Engineering Group is part of the Neutron Technologies Division and dedicated to provide and support key components and technologies required for the construction and operation of the facilities scientific instruments. The group will compose engineers and technicians of different areas of expertise, responsible for the evaluation, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical, safety interlock and motion/automation control systems on all instruments.
Main responsibilities
As Senior Technician Mechatronics you will design and construct mechanics & electronics of appropriated test environments for the evaluation of components for a standardised motion control system; plan, build-up and run the Electrical Engineering laboratory capacities necessary for R&D and service/maintenance.
You will support the engineers in testing standard components for cabling, electrical installation and process cooling and give them input in the different phases of the Neutron Instruments construction.
Further the role will manage small Electrical Engineering Work Units transferred from Instrument Work Packages; oversee the electrical installation of the motion control and automation devices during instruments construction; support the integration of the devices in the commissioning phase
The Senior Technician Mechatronics will be contact person for maintenance and service in the operations phase.
Qualifications
The nature of the position and the early phase of the instruments construction project requires someone polyvalent with both technical competence and hands-on experience. This includes a profound and certified practical education (apprenticeship/Ausbildung/HND) in the field of fine mechanics and/or electronics such as Mechatronics Technician, Industrial Mechanics/Electronics or similar plus an additional certified Engineering School or Technical College qualification to strengthen the theoretical background.
With at least 10 years work experience in international research facilities you are an expert in designing, constructing, testing and maintaining instrumentation technologies like precision mechanics, cryogenics, vacuum, control electronics and process cooling. At the same time you are hands-on in machining and tooling, mounting of precision mechanics as well as cabling and soldering of electronics and have experience in running a work shop environment. Experience of working in an international environment is essential. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
