International Department, Church of Sweden
The Act Church of Sweden takes a holistic view on wellbeing, where emotional, social and spiritual needs are addressed alongside those that are physical and biological. The community based psychosocial support (CBPS) approach is founded on the belief in the resources and capacities of emergency-affected individuals and communities to deal with difficulties, illness and distress and to recover. The humanitarian work is well integrated into the Church of Sweden’s international work. Within the Humanitarian Programme, Church of Sweden strives to ensure that quality community based psychosocial support is implemented in sudden onset emergencies, strengthen implementing partners capacity in CBPS in protracted crises, and promote CBPS at global and regional levels through knowledge generation and advocacy.
The Senior Thematic Adviser on CBPS is placed at the Church of Sweden’s Humanitarian Unit with the task of supporting humanitarian interventions and build capacity within the global, ecumenical alliance ACT Alliance. Act Church of Sweden is specialized on psychosocial support, taking a lead role within the ACT Alliance. This involves developing methods and guidelines on CBPS and supporting ACT partners in the case of an emergency with technical support, as well as supporting deployments from Church of Sweden’s Psychosocial Roster to humanitarian interventions implemented by ACT member organizations.
Responsibilities
- Providing technical support to partners to include a community based psychosocial approach and implement psychosocial components in emergency interventions, by for example introducing relevant methods, tools and guidelines.
- Providing thematic technical support to the Act Church of Sweden Humanitarian unit, for example on proposal screening, program monitoring and evaluation.
- Providing thematic support to other units/ sections at the Act Church of Sweden
- Providing technical support to the Psychosocial roster deployed on humanitarian missions.
- Contributing to an exchange of experience through the global and regional ACT Psychosocial Communities of Practice.
- Contributing to developing methods, materials and guidelines for linking CBPS to other humanitarian and development sectors.
- Results based monitoring and reporting, including budget planning and follow up.
- In case of emergencies be available for short term assessment mission as well as other international travel.
- Contributing to policy and communications’ activities.
- Documenting best practice and field case studies of community based psychosocial support work through partners.
Necessary Qualifications
- Master’s degree in development or humanitarian studies, human rights, political science, social work, global health or public health.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- 6 years of work experience in humanitarian field, of which 4 years in psychosocial support and community-based approaches.
- Experience of needs assessment, monitoring and evaluation in relation to psychosocial programming.
- Ability to work well in a multi-cultural environment.
Desirable
- PhD in social science, global health, public health or similar.
- Experience of working with institutional capacity strengthening.
- Experience with other sectors such as WASH, Protection, Education in Emergencies, Staff Care.
- Experience with working on quality and accountability including CRM.
- Knowledge of Arabic, Spanish, French or other relevant language.
